Caucus check-in
My caucus is at 5, so I have time to dig out beforehand.

Any word yet on which, if either, of the candidates will be in Portland? Or who they are sending in their place? In 2004 Portland had Dean and Kucinich in person and Robert Kennedy Jr. spoke as well.

1. Mine is at 2:30
check in at 2

Haven't heard anything about the candidates. The sun is peeking out here, but I guess that won't last for long. My caucus location is less than a mile down the road.

2. Belfast at 1:00
I'm getting ready to go set up.

Light snow here, not enough to stop Mainers.

5. Just back from Phippsburg.
25% of the Dem registered voters showed up for the caucus. I think they said 108 total people.

62- Obama (57 people there + 5 absentee ballots)

44 - Clinton

2 - undecided

delegates

4 - Obama

2 - Clinton

It came down to a coin toss at the end to decide the final delegate.

3. Just got back from Cape Elizabeth caucus
Huge, record-breaking turnout, we totally maxed out the space available to us. Hillary got a little over 200 votes and Obama got just under 600. Cape Elizabeth sends 28 delegates to the state convention, of which about 20 go to Obama.

4. Some more details about the CE caucus
First off, I think they said CE gets 37 delegates: I remember it being an odd number because the emcee guy said something about splitting evenly.

We arrived around 12:50, and already there was a line across the parking lot to get in. The checkin table was right next to the outer door to the high school cafeteria. The doors opened at 12:30 and were set to close at 1:30. Apparently the planners really underestimated the potential crowd, because there were only two people checking folks in. At that point we were all waiting outside (it was still sunny then), except for people who needed to register to vote for the first time or switch party affiliation. Around 1:15 someone came out and announced that everyone would be checked in and the doors would NOT be closed before everyone was in. A few minutes later, the queue moved to the inside of the high school because people were complaining about the cold. There was talk of moving to the auditorium, but whomever had the keys had left already, so we were stuck where we were. Obama stickers were everywhere, and Cynthia Dill (our state rep) came out occasionally to talk to people and carrying a Clinton sign.

I think I was finally checked in around 1:45ish, almost an hour after arriving, after a third person was added to the sign up table. To move us through quickly, we were asked our names and checked off the rolls. By that point they had stopped looking at IDs. It was all a big clusterfuck, and tempers were getting short. However, since it had started snowing again, we were all glad to be inside. I'd say only about half the folks there had chairs, if that. Everyone else was standing, and frankly I think we were above the fire marshal's capacity for the room. Speeches began at 2 or so, after all the local politicos were introduced. First the state candidates and their representatives, and then Tom Allen's representative. Finally were the speeches for the presidential candidates. Dill spoke for Clinton and did a fairly good job except for how damn loud she was speaking (we had snagged seats in the front row). When she pointed out that HRC was the first woman on the board of Wal-Mart, there was a lot of mumbling in a negative way. She got a good round of applause when it was over. Next was the speaker for Obama. Can't remember his name -- he wasn't a politician but had been working on Obama's campaign for over a year. He did a good job as well.

Then we split up for a preliminary vote, with Obama supporters going out into the hall and Clinton's caucus staying in the room. Because the crowds were so large, there was no way additional speeches or discussion could happen. So, we were told to write our preference on the white cards we had been given when we signed in, which were turned in to volunteers as we filed into the room. A few people meandered out because no one was sure what was to happen next, but then we were informed that we needed to stay in the room until the votes were verified, which didn't take long at all. The preliminary numbers were given (as KevinJ said: It was 500+ for Obama and 200+ for Clinton, with another 100 absentee ballots). We didn't stick around for the nomination and voting for of delegates, mainly because we won't be living in Maine by then.

7. Razor-thin close in Brewer.
Very healthy turnout in Brewer. Almost 4 times as many people as '04 (although of course we had it then after Kerry had been pretty much decided upon). 93 vote for Hillary, 94 for Obama. Wow. So damn close here. I hope Obama does much better over in Bangor. I went to the rally yesterday. Got right up close for the overflow speech outside since the audiorium was full. Man, never saw anything like it. Nine to ten thousand people there, and many more who gave up and left because they couldn't even park. Unreal energy ! Yeah, go Obama !!

8. I just got done in South Portland
It was a blowout for Obama down here. My ward was almost three quarters Obama supporters.

Patrick Kennedy spoke for Obama.

One thing is that there were tons of new Democrats being registered. They were overwhelmed with people getting their affiliation set to Democrat so they could caucus.

9. Liberty Caucus
Well, THAT was an interesting experience...we had 40 people, and 24 went for Obama, 11 for Hillary, and the rest went undecided...we only have 2 delegates, and somehow Obama & Hillary each got one...The snow was coming down HARD at the end...An interesting process, but I really think a Primary is the way to go...Way too confusing, and the undecideds got mad when the math showed no matter which way they voted, Hillary got one and Obama got one...

11. Interesting indeed
But I wasn't impressed by my first caucus experience. The main problem was that our city party unfortunately was not prepared for the deluge of new voters that were registering as Democrats to participate in the caucus. It was great to see all of these new Democrats, but it delayed the start of the caucus by at least an hour.

I arrived around 12:30, the thing didn't get started until 2:30, and then the actual voting for president wasn't going on until around 4pm. Finally I was out by 5:00. I'd much rather have a primary that takes about 15 minutes or less to cast a vote. I also have a suspicion that my ward was the most crazy of them all, since the space we were put into simply was not large enough for what was going on.

10. Blowout for Obama on MDI.
Mount Desert Island has gone heavily for Obama. About 380 people showed up. What I've been told is that Clinton got 60+ and Obama got 270+ or so, and the rest were uncommitted and even a few for Kucinich.

14. 425 in Belfast
Obama 288
Clinton 118

Delegates split 14-6

Turnout was more than double 2004. We had to delay over an hour to get everyone in. Lots of new people registered, and (this is why I support caucuses ) lots of new people volunteering to serve on the town and county committees.
