"Humble Farmer" let go from public radio for refusing to self-censor political views on-air
"Humble Farmer Leaves MPBN Following Dispute
http://www.mpbn.net/radio/stories.html

The Humble Farmer's jazz and humor program, a time-honored staple of the stations of the Maine Public Broadcasting Network, is no more. The end of a nearly thirty-year relationship between the host, Robert Skoglund, and MPBN comes after a long simmering dispute and allegations that the publically funded television and radio network was censoring free speech.Jeanne Baron reports. http://www.mpbn.net/asx/070613humble.asx "

1. Fuck MPBN then.
Humble Farmer was on of the best shows on Maine NPR, and the fact that they got it basically free just irritates me more.

2. here's an earlier story about it from channel 6 news (including a video I can't play)
http://www.wcsh6.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=57586

"Maine Public Broadcasting got an earful from its listeners Thursday about its decision to tell long time radio host Robert Skoglund, who's also known as the Humble Farmer, to tone down his act.

"For nearly 30 years, the Humble Farmer has told humorous stories and played traditional jazz music. But according to MPBN, Skoglund violated policy when he made some apparent anti-Bush statements and other political commentary.

"In a written statement, MPBN says its local on air staff is required to refrain from taking sides on political issues.

-snip-

"Skoglund has taken a vow of silence and now only plays songs and announces song titles for his MPBN show. There is no word yet on when the board of trustees may make a final decision on this matter."

Well I guess we know how it turned out now.

3. This doesn't bode well
for the revamp of MaineWatch that Jennifer Rooks was hired for. Looks like MPBN will continue to be an FDA-approved substitute for Sominex.

4. Interesting letter on Humble's website
Dear Mr. Dowe,

Thank you very much for sending me a copy of the "Conflict of Interest" guidelines that Maine Public Broadcasting Trustees are given upon appointment to the MPBN Board.

Because the censorship of the Humble Farmer, Robert Skoglund has been identified as stemming from his articulation of controversial political issues, it is important to illuminate some apparent conflicts of interest among your Board members.

Quoting from the document you kindly forwarded to me, the definition of conflict of interest is "

i. a material transaction effected or proposed to be effected by the Corporation to which a trustee, officer or employee of the Corporation is a party or in which such person otherwise has a direct or indirect financial interest

ii. a relationship of or a circumstance involving a Trustee, officer or employee of the Corporation that would reasonably be expected to exert an influence ion the judgment of the Trustee, officer or employee with respect to a material aspect of the business or affairs of the Corporation.

With that definition of conflict of interest in mind, according to the online Federal Election Commission Reports as of April 26, 2007, a better name for the Maine Public Broadcasting Network Board of Trustees might be "The Committee to Re-elect Senator Susan Collins" or during the last election cycle, Senator Olympia Snowe. Of your 22 Board members (I include you as a Board Member here), 11 members have given approximately $60,000 to either the campaigns of Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins. . This does not include Trustees who gave to a Political Action Committee, under the name of a corporation that they held partnership in or owned or whose individual contribution was given by a spouse and listed under the spouse’s name. Mr. Dowe, included in this list are your own contributions to Susan Collins’ campaign in 2002.

It is especially disturbing that between the MPBN Board Chair and Vice Chair, $10,000 in campaign contributions have been made to these two candidates. I will also note the very disturbing fact that Mr. Cohen, less than 2 weeks before the April 12, 2007 meeting, gave a $1000 contribution to Susan Collins, as did Mr. Wishcamper’s company. I heard no acknowledgement of those contributions as a conflict of interest during the April 12 meeting, even after I noted that Mr. Skoglund’s censorship began on the very evening that he attended a publicized non-Olympia Snowe candidate campaign event.

Because of the accusation that Mr. Skoglund threatens the "trust" that MPBN has created with the public over the years, I believe that your Board members who have given so generously to these two Republican candidates should recuse themselves form any involvement in decision making about Mr. Skoglund’s censorship. To do less is to engage in an overt and I think hypocritical, conflict of interest in handling this matter.

I would very much appreciate open acknowledgement of the conflict of interest that this extensive history of financial contribution to the campaigns of the two Republican Senators by the majority of your Board members creates. Thank you for your kind response to my letter.

Sincerely,

Susan Cook

Clearly Humble's firing is not political and clearly there can't be any conflict of interest. :sarcasm:

5. Another curious thing
In another thread I posted about the recent dumping of Portland's 870 The Voice (WLVP). A search I did on opensecrets.org showed that the CEO of Nassau Broadcasting, Louis F. Mercatanti, is a big time republiCON donor (gave $25,000 to the RNC in 2005). Combined with Humble Farmer's banishment from MPBN, a girl could start to wonder. Probably a stretch, but it sure is sounding like Susan Collins will have a more favorable media environment for the coming Senate campaign.

7. I stopped being a faithful listener/view of MPBN in 2003.
This confirms it was a very good idea.

8. I stopped in 2004
when I began to see more and more RW tilt in commentary and perspectives on MPBN's NPR shows like Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Weekend Edition. I also noticed that they were attempting to put a muzzle on Daniel Schorr, a liberal news analyst, whose commentary I had always enjoyed. They started having another person ask him questions rather than just letting him do his commentary. There's also MPBN's refusal to add Amy Goodman to their line-up to provide for some actual diversity in perspectives available to listeners. I used to be a faithful contributor during their pledge drives. No more!

9. Same here......this is mind blowing, actually.
Robert Skogland was a real unique on-air personality...no one quite like him, anywhere else. I've enjoyed his company for may years on the back porch on a summer's night. I doubt he crossed any line that most MPBN subscribers would have an issue with. I used to be a subscriber...no more.
