FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Governor's Statement on the Death of State Rep. Holman

AUGUSTA - Governor John Baldacci issued the following statement today after learning of the death of state Rep. Abigail Holman of Fayette:

"Abby was a tremendous political force," Governor Baldacci said Saturday. "I've known her since her days in Governor McKernan's administration. She was a dedicated public servant and always worked hard for the people of Maine. Her family is in our hearts and prayers during this terrible time."

On edit... she was killed at Sugarloaf. http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/010737.html

1. I saw that. What bad luck for her kids. Their father died horribly, too.

Holman, a Republican, was elected to the House of Representatives in November after facing competition in both the primary and the general election. She represented District 83, which included the towns of Belgrade, Fayette, Manchester, Mount Vernon and Vienna.

Holman had lost her husband, Andrew Weegar, in a tragic tractor accident two years ago at the family's North Road farm. Police determined Weegar, 41, died after being trapped under the tractor's tire for a day.

She recently was engaged to marry Dr. Jeffrey Timm of Manchester, a dentist, and the ceremony was scheduled for June....."She was doing a terrific job of juggling being a mother, being in the Legislature and starting working with us," Roger Katz, a partner with the firm, said Saturday night. "She was very, very happy. It's just beyond tragic."...Julie O'Brien, executive director of the Maine Republican Party, called Holman "an incredibly intelligent, incredibly talented individual. Her husband was called a Renaissance man. I guess I would call her a Renaissance woman."

O'Brien said Holman was one of the more moderate members of the Republican Party....

On Edit--her late husband was an environmentalist. You can see photos of him and her at this site: http://www.ijnr.org/Andrew/index.htm

4. From the Maine Democratic Party
We at the Maine Democratic Party are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of State Representative Abigail Holman (R-Fayette). Abby was a widely respected member of Maine’s political community for many years. We will all remember her for her skillful efforts in government and on the campaign trail.

Her passing is a loss to her friends and colleagues in Augusta, but especially to her young daughter, Molly, who tragically lost her father just two years ago.

We write at this time to encourage you to offer a donation to the fund for Molly’s college education.
The Maura Weegar College Trust was established after her father’s death.

Checks may be sent to the following:
Maura Weegar College Trust
248 North Road,
Fayette, Maine 04349

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Representative Holman's family and friends.

Sincerely,

Ben Dudley, Chairman
Maine Democratic Party
