Just outside New Orleans, maybe about a half-mile outside of the city limits, along hte river. Until Janurary, I lived about a half-mile inside hte city limits. . .I guess I just keep jumping over the same canal.

37. Love, and Giant Flyin' Cock-a-Roaches
And the weather. I met my wife in Washington, D.C. She didn't think she could handle moving anywhere with more hot, humid weather than D.C. has.

And I thought I could handle living here, perhaps even find it stimulating, since at some point in my life I took an interest in the literature of arctic exploration. I think it made those nights when I was living with a girl who was allergic to the things that live in air conditioning (and hence, living in NOLA without airconditioning) a bit more bareable, imagining those far-away, cold places.

Hey, you get used to it. Now, I think it's OK to go snowshoeing when its, oh, 10 above.

not so's you'd know by the lack of attention this seems to be getting in New Orleans.
I feel sometimes I'm the only person I know (and I know LOTS of dem activists) who is concerned about the open senate seat.
Much more attention is being given locally to criminal sheriff's seat than senate seat.
I believe people are conceding defeat to Vitter. (the republican puppet)

76. New Orleans East
I was going to leave this thread alone, but since it has been kicked...
I just moved back here after 20 years in Chicago. I am just loving this 77 degree December day.
I notice many people here have moved away from Louisiana, just as I did. Let me tell you displaced New Orleanians, the culture shock of moving back, is maybe worse than moving away, lol.

79. Hey Boo, thanks.
Well, what can I say? The openness here, especially of interracial issues is something that would shock and alarm alot of people. I hear blacks discussing whites, openly and honestly, which was very well hidden in Chicago. The streets are full of funny, eccentric people (and I think that is a good thing). The city is full of artists, musicians (I was one of those once upon a time), drifters, transvestites, etc., in other words, outcasts anywhere else. Then there is the language I need to recover, like "boo", "cap", and I really need to stop saying "you guys" when I mean y'all, lol. I need to relearn how to have conversations with strangers that go beyond the "It sure is cold" I have become used to. Chicago of course has old buildings, and old neighborhoods and great architecture, but it all seems very brown and grey. Here a pink building with blue trim is commonplace. I notice the people are loud, boisterous, ready to have fun and slack off at the drop of a hat. The very feeling of the city feels foreign to me right now (my brother calls out of towner's foreigners). Even though I love it and feel like I truly belong here. There is more I will discover in time, I'm sure. I've only been back for about a month and most of that has been spent moving in and getting settled. Where are the cool places for a middle aged guy to hang out(I'm 44)? I heard about the Circle Bar. But my old hangouts are gone, like Jed's and Jimmy's.

80. Wa'yat!
Welcome home and welcome to DU. I spent one Winter in Chicago visiting my brother - NEVER AGAIN! Too damn cold. I know what you mean about the Circle Bar etc. I used to play at Jimmy's and Jed's (I live just down the street). I was reminded about this loss when another New Orleans DUer quizzed me about the name of the bass player from The Cold. Remember them? I also really miss going to hear live music like Fats Domino on the riverboat President, or concerts in the Wharehouse.

At least Cooter Browns is still here. :hi:

81. Hey, thanks.
I not only remember the Cold, but have an mp3 of "Three Cord City", and a couple other of their songs. Wasn't their bass player Vance DeGeneres? I played Jed's and Jimmy's in the late 70's early 80's too. hmmmm. I wonder if we know each other? lol. The President is now a casino in Debuque, IA. I was there a few years ago and was surprised to find it there. By the way, although I have only recently started posting I have been a BIG lurker here since right after 9/11/01.

82. Yes, I lurked since the Summer of 2001
I found this place via BuzzFlash.com where I got my early education. ;) I was so pissed about Bush and the Harkin crap, stolen election etc. I started reading news on the Internet. I found DU because of the "Top Ten Conservative Idiots" then I began surfing the forums. By 2002, I found I was getting information faster from the DU LBN thread than having to read entire articles from BuzzFlash, because so many folks here pool their efforts and resources. By then I was reading DU every day. Even when I lived in Brasil last year, I went to the cyber cafes everyday and read for hours, sweating my ass off in the heat (2 degrees South latitude!). Finally, this last summer I decided I had something to say.

As for playing at Jimmy's etc., I played there in the mid 80's. The late 70s early 80s I was in high school, though I was a roadie for Woodenhead a few times (Jimmy Robinson was my guitar teacher for a short while). I went on to get a couple of degrees in music in classical guitar, but now I play mostly Brazilian percussion during Mardi Gras. On Fat Tuesday, I'll likely be on Frenchmen St. playing samba, etc.

Yep, Vance DeGeneres is correct.

83. Alexandria Here...
Actually, I'm a little north of Alexandria. For some reason I'm not surprised I'm the only one posting from this area...I'm surrounded by a bunch of squirrelly-assed Bush freaks.
