Info On Zelma "Tisa" Blakes (Rodney's apponent- 5th district)
This is an email written by a Democratic supporter in the 5th district. I have edited it slightly to save time.

"Dear Dem Friends,

I will be glad to tell you a little bit about Tisa Blakes. ...
When many of us felt the signs were crystal clear that Rodney was flipping, we were concerned that he would do a last-minute switch and leave us no Dem on the ticket.... One woman up here had the courage to offer herself for public service, despite the mean and personal nature of elections these days.

Someone asked whether she is a person who has what it takes to win. The answer is yes. But the more important question is whether WE have what it takes to get her elected. And whether WE have what it takes to get Kerry elected. ...
And this year we have an African-American man running for Senate and an African-American woman running in the 5th District.
What a great opportunity to inspire the largest Dem turnout in the
history of our state--where we have 1,600,000 registered Dems and 600,000 registered Reps.

Now, about our 5th District candidate.

Tisa Blakes is a bright, energetic, creative, and strong young woman. She is 32 years old. She is African-American. She is the first African-American woman to run from this District for Congress (maybe from the whole state?) and when she wins she will be the youngest member of Congress. Her husband, Leroy Marshall, works full time at LSU Monroe (Conway) Health Sciences Center and
has a second career as a musician. They have two daughters, 6 and 3. Tisa's mother is Betty Blakes, longtime member and past chair of the Ouachita Democratic Parish Executive Committee. Her aunt Ada Blakes has also been active on the Committee. Tisa's grandfather, Alfred Blakes, was a major figure in the Civil Rights movement in northeast Louisiana and ran for and held many elected offices. He was the first African-American to run for mayor of Monroe (he was
not elected to that post).

Tisa started working when she was 13 years old. While attending Southern University and later McNeese (which she graduated from in the mid-90s), she worked two jobs. Currently she is raising her children and is an active volunteer in her community. She and her husband belong to two churches, the one she grew up in (Antioch Baptist Church in Monroe) and the one he grew up in (Liberty
Christian Church in Monroe). They attend each church two Sundays per month with their daughters, and they tithe at both churches. Tisa is a Democrat right down the line. She will be setting up a web site and will make all of her positions known, but she is very much in line with the Democratic platform.

I am thrilled to be able to vote November 2 for a Congresswoman who is PROUD to have a D for Democrat by her name."

I encourage everyone who is able to donate to Tisa's campaign... even if you don't live in the 5th distrcit of Louisiana.

When i find out more information about her website and campaign, I will post it here. Come On DU LA! Rally around Tisa!

1. RE Zelma
OK, I didn't know she was Betty's daughter. As the only Democrat in the race it's not as if I had a choice, but that seals my vote for her!

6. Run, Tisa, Run!
I am so pleased to learn that the Democrats are not left without a viable candidate, after Rodney's cowardly last-minute switch of loyalty to the Republicans. I note that Sen. Mary Landreau so characterized his action, and perhaps she will campaign for Blakes. I'm voting in Florida myself, but like many Democrats I was outraged at Rodney. We all ought to do everything we can to support Tisa in her campaign. There is a good chance that we can take back the House from Hastert, Delay, and Co. this fall.
