Some Republicans want Giuliani to lead Louisiana recovery effort

# Complete Local Coverage

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., urged President Bush to appoint former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani or two former military officials to run the ground response in the Gulf Coast, saying local authorities are not up to the task. Sweeney suggested Giuliani or retired generals Colin Powell and Tommy Franks could take charge of the much-criticized hurricane relief efforts.

One prominent Republican, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, criticized the Bush administration for being sluggish, and urged the president to name Giuliani as the White House point person for relief efforts. Gingrich said the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina “puts into question all of the Homeland Security and Northern Command planning for the last four years, because if we can’t respond faster than this to an event we saw coming across the Gulf for days, then why do we think we’re prepared to respond to a nuclear or biological attack?”

But Sweeney defended the Federal Emergency Management Agency in charge of the effort, blaming instead Louisiana and New Orleans officials.

“I think the federal response has been frustrated by the lack of experience on the ground from the local people to really coordinate this,” said Sweeney.

((I continue to think our local officials did the best they could do with what they had, and were not supported by the feds they way they should have been....which is putting it mildly. Overwhelmed, yes, I'd say so, but isn't that what FEMA is for? To help out so the localities don't get overwhelmed?))

3. Great.....just what we need here Giuliani and Tommy Franks
Just when you think things couldn't possibly get any worse, they start talking about crap like this. I agree with you ann, I think Mayor Ray and Kathleen did the best they could with the situation. If the Feds would have stopped the leak in the god-damned levy when Mayor Ray told them it needed to be done, instead of thinking about it...and thinking about it....and thinking about it, then having to take time to get a private contractor to do the work, things would have been better. And some dumb-asses around here STILL think Bush is great....."it's not his fault...alot of bad stuff has just "happened" while he has been in charge." I almost vomit when I hear the locals say crap like that. I guess that just proves that some people are, and always will be,rock stupid.

4. Amen, and I must say
it's amazing to hear your very unlady-like language...its just not like you. LOL LOL LOL LOL....you are great...I really let loose last night on GD board, was cursing a bunch of DUers like a MF, and Benito stepped in and kinda calmed me down...but then Swamp Rat jumped in, defending Landrieu, and they respected his opinion. Anyway, welcome to the foul-mouth club, ain't it liberating?

5. It most certainly is!
I guess Mayor Ray's fit last night rubbed off on me! I'm tired of it all...the political pandering, the jovial back-slapping that the politicians give each other on the "great job" they have done. I'm sick of elected officials like Bennett Johnston,Bob Livingston,Billy Tauzin and John Breaux that get rich while the people of Louisiana get jack-shit. That is one of the greatest travesties.....up until two years ago we had some of the most powerful members of congress representing us, and they COULD have gotten us more funds to fight the coastal erosion so half of Plaquemines parish didn't disappear, and they COULD have gotten more funds to reinforce the levies in New Orleans, and the COULD have done a hell of a lot more for Louisiana citizens. But they didn't. They didn't give a crap. All they cared about were making themselves rich, and "retiring" to multi-million dollar lobbying jobs. In last year's budget do you know what Louisiana got the largest lump-sum budgeted amount for? The "J.Bennett Johnston Recreational Waterway." Know where that is? It's the Red Sandbar (I mean River) in Alexandria. The money was to develop the river and riverbank into a recreational area in honor of one of our "Greatest Senators". Great my ass. That dumb-ass project got something like $21 million...while I-49 got $10 million. I'm sick of them all. (Please excuse me tonight...I'm pissed and I'm not going to get over it any time soon):)

6. You're shittin' me!
I never heard about the J. Bennet Johnston thing....what a joke...kinda like the Sunshine Bridge?

You know, it's just a bizarro world, and I'm having a hard time with it too. Nothing makes sense anymore, and no one seems to care. Oh my god, do you think it actually IS the "endtimes?"

Finecraft, picture this:

A small island, off the coast of Cancun, great beaches, no high-rise in sight, no wally world, no chain-anything. Lovely local people who are so kind and gracious....a good mix of locals and visitors, mostly Americans and Canadians...and in the summer the Italians, Germans. Everyone you meet is friendly, no one is stressed, and the biggest decision you have to make for the day is where to have dinner that night....and it will be in a little, outdoor, sidewalk cantina-type cafe with fresh veggies and seafood. Plenty of old-hippy types around, plenty of music, plenty of beer. The peso is 10 to the dollar, so things are cheaper. You don't need a car, because you walk everywhere, or take a taxi for a dollar or two to the other end of the island to look at the surf from the Caribbean. Well, I have been visiting that place for years....it is Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico.....and I am thinking of moving there permanently after I retire in January. This country is just SO fucked up that I want to seriously get away from it. And, even if Dems take control of the gov't again, people here are just SO fucked up, they will never get unfucked.

I can out-curse you, girlfriend!

It is the constantly being outraged that is getting me down. I am SO tired of being mad, frustrated, and just totally outraged. It's hard to live like this, seeing things like you mentioned EVERY DAY, and no one does anything, and no one cares. AAARRRGGGHHHH!
