an unusually cool and wet July in the KC area
We have only had two 90 degree days so far this July. And, there aren’t any in the forecast. Remember, the average high is now 89 degrees and we are just moving into what is usually the hottest time of the year. Let’s look at the past five Julys to compare and look at what happened in August:

# of 90º days in July Highest Temperature # of 90º days in August

2004 4 95º on the 13th 6

2005 17 99º on the 23rd 11

2006 19 104º on the 19th 15

2007 12 93º on the 18th 24

2008 7 96º on the 21st 6

2009 2 91º on the 9th ?

Only two days over 90 so far in July, compared to an average of 11.8 in the last 5 years. 2004 only had 4 days over 90, but unlike this year it at least got up to 95 degrees. Electric bill should be decent this month except I am going to have to do more mowing - with my electric mower.

1. Wasn't June hot?
I thought friends back there had reported a spate of 100 plus degree days.

And isn't it nice to be a little cooler for a change?

I used to live there and among the reasons I left and moved to NM was the awful hot and humid summers.

2. yeah I just remembered that I was running both ACs about 24/7 for a while
that was why I started shutting off my surge protector when I wasn't watching TV. So maybe that electric bill won't be so low.

I prefer the dry summers since I hate getting rained on, but I bet NM is better for that too. But I thought the SW was hot.

3. Santa Fe is at 7,000 feet, plus,
depending on exactly where in the city or county you are. Last week it was getting up into the 90's, but we have overnight lows in the 60's or even 50's. I don't have and don't need a/c. I open up my windows overnight and have a ceiling fan in my living room and I'm quite comfortable. Last night I lowered my bedroom window to a crack because it was getting seriously chilly in the room.

I hate heat. I've lived in Tucson and Phoenix and for three years in the DC area without a/c. About two and a half years ago when I figured out that I'd be getting divorced and realized that I was free to live anywhere I wanted, I briefly considered returning to the DC area as I still have relatives and many friends there, but then I decided I would never again live where I need a/c in the summer. I could hardly be happier.
