School advocates want nearly $1 billion, special master
This could get interesting...

TOPEKA — A school finance plan approved last week by the Kansas Legislature is unconstitutional and needs to be replaced with a $1 billion spending increase, attorneys for plaintiff school districts told the Kansas Supreme Court.

The $125 million increase passed by the Legislature in response to a court order ignored crucial directions from the court, attorney Alan Rupe argued in a new filing with the court.

"These students should not be forced to wait another minute to receive what our constitution guarantees them," said Rupe, who represents a group of school districts that successfully sued the state.

In January, the court ruled the Legislature had failed its constitutional duty to provide suitable finance for schools. It gave lawmakers until April 12 to increase funding and make the distribution of schools funds more equitable.

3. they're hammering the Universities to get the funds
You didn't think it was going to magically appear, or that they would increase taxes. The University budgets got nailed to make up this money.
