Daschle and Fallon Support Spencer for IA-4 Tonight
There has been little discussion of the 4th Congressional District race on DU, perhaps because there may not be many people on this site from the 4th District. But the race is worth watching.

Dr. Selden Spencer is a neurologist from Huxley and a political unknown. But he is doing well in fund raising (considering he did not decide to run until March), and he is a sharp individual with progressive ideas. He is running against a far right candidate, Tom Latham. Latham maintains a very low profile and has only one thing to be proud of: he is good at earmarking bills and wasting taxpayers' money. He always votes the far-right party line, voting with Tom DeLay 94% of the time, including votes against reproductive rights, for the war, against labor, against the environment, and for tax cuts for the wealthy. The district leans Democratic in voting (PVI = +0.4 D), and Latham is one of only 25 Republican incumbents residing in a Dem-voting district. With an anti-incumbent mood, there is a chance to knock Latham out of office.

There is a great opportunity to meet Dr. Spencer tonight (Friday, June 9). There will be a fundraiser from 6-8 pm for Selden Spencer in Ames. There are two prominent guests scheduled. Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota will be there to support Dr. Spencer's candidacy, and so will Ed Fallon. If you are in the Central Iowa area tonight, it will be a great chance to thank Rep. Ed Fallon for running in the governor's race. It will also be an opportunity to meet Tom Daschle, a terrific individual who is obviously testing the waters in Iowa. And of course, you'll have a chance to meet Selden Spencer.

There will be a barbecue supper along with frozen margaritas (not sure how long they will last), beer, wine and plenty of soft drinks. Donations at the door, which opens at 6 pm.

The event will be at the home of Brent and Maggie Wynja, 1210 Hunziker Dr., Ames. You can call Spencer for Congress Headquarters (515-232-2064) for more details.

It should be a great event, and Spencer is a great candidate!

1. I won't be there...
But I wanted to say thank you for the work you are doing to elect Democrats in District 4. I am sure it can be somewhat frustrating to see the majority of the talk in the Iowa forum ignoring districts to the west of 1 & 2, but I wanted to say that it is because I know little about them, and not any sort of intentional slight.

I live in Cedar Rapids and, as a political newbie, I am just learning the political landscape of eastern Iowa. Hoepfully with your help I will learn a few things outside of my "home" region.

I look forward to your updates on Dr. Spencer's campaign, and even if I don't chime in everytime, it's not because I don't care!

2. Thanks for your interest
I will try to update this site as the campaign progresses. This will be an exciting year for Democrats across the state. There are many great opportunities, if we can just work hard and smart.

3. I probably won't make it
I have family coming to town. I need to see what time they are coming in. If it is late then I might be able to make the trip over.

4. Hope this is a great event!
I just got off the phone with the Story Co. Chair and they are expecting a good group of people to hear Sen. Daschle. Here's hoping this brings a great deal of excitement to Dr. Spencer's campaign.
