Off topic - pop or soda?
Not a political question... I'm writing a story with a character from Iowa, and I'm wondering what "generic" word Iowans use for the fizzy non-alcoholic beverages that we Michiganders call "pop," and furners like New Yawkers call "soda."

Can anybody help?

4. Couch!
for me. Although "davenport" isn't unheard of around here either. Then again, neither is sofa.

3. Thanks! - 'Nother question...
Is the pop called "Squirt" popular there? If not, what is?

I like it for the associations it brings - first, it was created during the depression, second, it used to be the best part of going to the grainery with my dad. (A bottle of Squirt and a handful of peanuts out of the penny dispenser is a joy to all, right?)

... but most people won't know those things, so it's not *that* important...

I haven't heard of Squirt for a long time. It reminds me of the old days of Tab.

7. Well, it's still around
And I think I'm going to use it instead of the generic "pop" - even if most readers won't know the associations, *I* will, and hey, it's MY story, right? :-)

10. Hmmm... I use soda
I don't think I've heard anyone here call it pop. When I go home to Oklahoma, it's referred to formally (by first and last name): soda pop :)

11. LOL! Formally
So, "soda" is only for close friends, and "Pop" is more like business, or the military, where people are referred to by their last names only?

Thank you!

17. actually, Pepsi or Coke
proper names have replaced pop and soda here. Since
restuarants and McDonalds etc carry one or the other, these
folks consider them whatever they "have on tap".
Actually, when I started working as a receptionist at our
local Pepsi bottler in 1969, I was called aside by the Gen
Manager and told very politely "the word is soda, not
pop, not ever".

Times were much simpler back then. Back in the fifties, our
favorite was really a form of chocolate milk in a pop bottle.
On weekends, we'd stop at the store in "uptown Holy
Cross" after church every Sunday.

Best of luck with the story ....

14. Soda pop
Or I have referred to it as a soft drink and sometimes I have been offered a sodie water.

My grandfather sat on a davenport and I sat on the couch. But I do see sofa sets on sell in the circular.

19. Growing up in Montana I drank pop
Now that I live in Iowa I drink soda (and my favorite? Welch's Strawberry Soda!! YUM!!)

There actually used to be a 50's era style diner called "Danny's Diner" here in Cedar Falls that had soda fountain sodas and malteds. Every Satruday night was 'classic car' night. It was a neat place to go.
