Nice Yepsen Hack-Job on Fallon (read sarcasm here)
http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060307/OPINION01/603070364/1036

You all can go to the site and read it - I won't offend Fallon supporters by posting any of Yepsen's comments here. Obviously David got a call from Terrace Hill after Fallon did so well at the County Conventions. "Gotta shut the guy up and shut his support down". I'm really getting sick of the Blouin-Bullies and all their sycophants! (and I'm a freakin Culver supporter).

 to the DMR once again.

1. Damn, I'm sick of reading this...
"If Democrats still haven't figured out what it is they stand for, at least they seem to understand what they're against..."

2. DMR vs. Fallon and the IDP
They really have it in for Fallon. There was not a word of any of the county conventions in the Register Sunday, though all the sports information from Saturday night was there. Not even the Polk County Convention! Monday and Tuesday, again not a mention, except Yepsen's anti-Fallon article.

The conventions were the biggest political news in Iowa last weekend, and they pretend that they never happened!

I sent an e-mail to Carolyn Washburn (editor) about the lack of coverage, which not only hurt Fallon, but also the whole Iowa Democratic Party. Why can't we get the same free publicity that the Republicans get?

If you want to share your thoughts with her: cwashburn@dmreg.com

3. I don't think the IDP wants the convention informatin to be public
otherwise they'd have to admit that the Blouin support is manufactured in the statehouse and not so hot anywhere else. Maybe I'm mistaken.

4. You may be right
But still, the DMR completely ignoring the event? The Register would not ignore it solely because the IDP wanted it. The Register is more Republican than Democratic (though I think the editorial pages go the other way, slightly). I think they wanted to snub the Democratic Party (and Ed Fallon's success).

Our Ames Tribune had an article about our county convention in the Sunday morning paper. It was reported like any other major political event. It was not as complete as I would like, but the event was not ignored. Our 4th District candidate Seldon Spencer spoke to the convention and did an interview with the Tribune reporter, but they failed to give Spencer's name in the paper. Oh well.

5. That was a horrible article
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 05:23 PM by pstans
I wonder when they are going to print an article that states the reasons Culver, Blouin, and Nussle shouldn't be Governor? Better yet, why don't they print an article stating the reasons why Yepsen shouldn't have a column.

:banghead:

I have a couple of things to add.

1. This quote.... "Democrats still haven't figured out what it is they stand for, at least they seem to understand what they're against"... tells a lot about the race.

Which candidate actually has postions (hint, check their websites)? That would be Ed Fallon. Yepsen cracks on the Democrats for not standing up for anything and then when one does (Fallon) he knocks him down. Fallon stands on making the playing fair and bringing power back to the average Iowan. He stands on principle on his clean elections law. He continues standing on that theme being against corporate welfare. He wants to grow Iowa by supporting small businesses, Main Streets, our schools, and through sustainable agriculture. He wants health care for every Iowan and wants to take the burden of providing health care off the backs of Iowa businesses. Just check the issues, Ed Fallon stands for something.

2. The title of the article should have been "The passion stirring Democrats may help Fallon, but the Register will make sure he has no chance."

10. I know some here are still pissed at Fallon for the Nader endorsement
And I might have been had Gore lost Iowa...but Gore did not lose Iowa (even with Fallon's endorsement of Nader)....so it seems sill to be pissed off at Ed Fallon for Bush's stealing the election in FLA or Nader getting support in some other state.

Now, had he worked for Nader in 2004, when Kerry lost Iowa, THEN I might be holding a grudge.....

6. I've wondered for a long time why the Register keeps Yepson?
He's the reason I quit reading that rag. I'd really like to see at least an attempt at reporting the story rather than him using his column to push the RW agenda. The least they could do is give his column a truthy title like "a look from the right side" or some such shit.

7. Yepsen has been doing that RW crap for 24 years now
and they keep him on while nearly ALL the good and witty and interesting columnists in the time he began are gone. (Well, they didn't really have too many). Donald Kaul used to give a good liberal viewpoint but he is long gone. I don't understand Yepsen's longevity since he says the same garbage year in and year out with no attempt at fresh ideas or metaphors. It has to be some political reason or something we don't know about that has kept him there so long. And how about how the op ed people monopolize entire pages on how progressive they think they are and how hard we have to work to keep up to their great ideals and they don't have a single African-American or Latino on their whole staff?

8. Reka Basu seems to be pretty good
I read the register so seldom I can't do much analysis. When I do get it, Basu is about the only one I can stand to read.

9. Dick Doak
They also have Dick Doak, who is progressive, but he really does not comment on Iowa politics. Yepsen and another Republican from Washington who has a column in the Sunday Register (Jane Norman?) are the only pure political writers, and their bias is incredibly transparent.
