Roger Bang was running unopposed. Guard your checkbooks people! He never met a corporate handout he didn't like.

1. Western Iowa.
It's like Nebraska. Sad.

3. Yes it is.
They can just as well give it to Nebraska and South Dakota as far as I'm concerned. The rest of us have to try and live down the backwards stereotype that NW Iowa projects to the rest of the world.

5. Is Mason City really Western Iowa?
The area seems more like Eastern Iowa for the most part to me.

6. No Mason City is considered North Central Iowa.
It's a little more diverse than I thought before I moved here. There are people of various ethnic backgrounds, a thriving Greek community, Italians, African-Americans. But it's very VERY old. It's more like Eastern Iowa than Western by a long shot.

4. Yes it certainly is.
I'd a thought someone would run for the Dems.

7. Reading all the posts here I think Mason City's problem is that it's old
Cerro Gordo County needs an influx of new blood! Amanda Reagan is awesome, but where are the younger folks? With NIACC right in Mason City there should be some college age people working to elect Democrats.

8. It's VERY old. Very Very much so.
Some of the largest buildings are for senior living.

9. My grandparents live up there
Mom and Dad and all their siblings were raised in MC. Just doesn't seem like a place that people move to in order to raise a family. (I do love the Music Man Museum though!)

10. It's not Western Iowa
and it doesn't seem like a bad place to me. I turned down a call there, and I'm still kicking myself!! One thing that impresses me is that the community stood up to Sparboe when it wanted to build a factory farm outside of town. Sparboe finally gave up--and built it three miles from me in Eagle Grove.

Mason City's "gumption" impressed me!!

And the Music Man Museum is nice!

11. It's not a bad place to live.
Actually, you'd be suprised at the number of people I've met from other regions of the country who moved here. New York, New Jersey, San Francisco are well represented, Virginia, Louisiana and South Carolina too. It's just that a large % of people are older. There's not a big company to draw masses of new people. Winnebago brings newbies, along with the hospital here and Kraft Foods, but not a lot.

Yes the museum is nice.

12. Last time there were, what? 7 candidates running?
If I knew know one else was going to be running, I might have signed up myself, just to prevent an unopposed election. :)

On the plus side, the mayor doesn't have much power, and the public telecom vote passed.

13. I'm suprised Democrats didn't put someone in there
at least to get their feet wet in politics. Yeah with the City Manager the mayor's power is diminished. But I'm just watching 'ol Roger and keeping my pocketbook in a lockbox.
