Culver unveils $100 million ethanol plan

Iowa Secretary of State Chet Culver today proposed spending $100 million in state revenue to help make Iowa the nation's leader in ethanol-powered vehicles.

"I believe that campaigns should be about ideas and vision and you deserve to know what I will do as your governor," said Culver, who announced his candidacy with his wife, Mary, and two children at his side.

Culver would use the money as an incentive to assist businesses expanding in the area of renewable fuel-related manufacturing. He would also appoint a director of renewable energy to oversee the program.

Culver, 39, is the seventh candidate to enter the race, although he has been raising money, traveling and establishing a campaign staff all year.

A former teacher and coach at Hoover, Culver was joined by more than 100 people, including dozens of students, for the event in the school cafeteria.

I am happy to see that he officially entered the race. Regardless of whether I choose to back him, I think he will make a strong adversary for Blouin and I think we need that at this stage of the game.

Besides, I am all for ethanol.

CF beat them in the regular season so cross your fingers (and they knocked off Cow Pie High - the only team to beat CF this year!!!)

I'm happy Chet is in the race and going strong. I don't know how happy I am about the ethanol issue (I like the idea, don't get me wrong) since Nussle came out for it a while ago. Don't really want to wage a war of me-too-ism with the republicans. However, Iowa should be an ethanol state and maybe everyone running should be for it.

Cow Pie high alum huh? My mom and dad and my girlfriend's dad graduated from there...not to age yourself, but if you graduated between 1970-1975 you probably know someone in my family!

I was a Jefferson kid, but at least you were a West Sider!
