Letter From David Loebsack

Dear friends,

Well, it’s been quite the fall so far, especially since I announced my
candidacy
for congress in late August. There is no doubt that the country and
this
district are ready for a real change in congress. There is also no
doubt that
folks want to change who is controlling the agenda at the national
level. Those
Republicans who are running the show are clearly doing all they can to
limit or
eliminate the very opportunities so many hardworking Americans need to
continue
to move forward or to get back on their feet if they have been dealt
setbacks by
the economy. There is no doubt that the fiscally irresponsible
behavior of the
Republicans will prevent us from restoring the cuts that have hurt so
many
Americans, let alone allow us to move forward.

But it is also clear that more and more Americans across the country,
including
scores I have heard from in the second district, are ready for a
change, a
change in the direction of restoring hope for the millions of Americans
left
behind in George Bush’s America.

This campaign has received an outpouring of support since my
announcement and I
thank all of you for contributing time and financial support. We have
raised
more money this early in the election cycle than any previous opponent
to the
incumbent. We have signed up hundreds of volunteers. And we have been
covered
several times by the large media outlets in the district, including the
story
pasted below from the Cedar Rapids Gazette last Saturday.

Now it is time to move forward more assertively and efficiently. To
that end, I
hired Melanie Friedman, an Iowa Citian and a well-known and
well-respected
activist and fundraiser, to manage the campaign. Melanie has already
taken a
huge load off my shoulders as she has moved nicely into her role. We
also have
two full-time interns who are doing a great job and next month will
have two
more to take their place.

In the meantime, please know how much I appreciate all you have done
and will do
in the future. At the moment, I am doing what I can to redouble my
efforts on
the fundraising front. While I did very well through September 30th, I
have to
do even better by the end of the year. I hope those of you who have
yet to

2nd District challenger raises $52,765

WASHINGTON - Democrat David Loebsack of Mount Vernon, in his first
run for
public office, said Friday he had raised nearly $53,000 in his uphill
effort to
dislodge Republican Rep. Jim Leach in the 2nd District.

Loebsack, 52, is a veteran Democrat activist in Iowa and has served
as a
political science professor at Cornell since 1982.

Loebsack reported to the Federal Election Commission that he raised
$48,760 in the July 1 to Sept. 30 quarter, and $52,765 overall since
declaring his candidacy. He said he had no debts and had $51,820 cash
on
hand after expenditures.
