Harkin wows West Liberty crowd

I have to relay one story Senator Harkin told the crowd...


I had a republican business man friend of mine come to my office. He said, Tom there is one thing we can agree on and that is government cannot give people hope. Senator Harkin took this man by the arm and showed him the two things that hang on the wall of his office. "I don't have the me wall. You know the one that has me with famous people etc etc etc" There is a drawing of my mother's house in slovania with the dirt floor where the animals lived on one side and the poeple on the other. His father had lost his job and his farm in the depression. He was 54 years old with an 8th grade education. So he showed his friend the other item on the wall of his office which was a little orange ticket. That ticket was singed by a bunch of poeple and it said WPA such and such a date 1939. You are to report on this date for work at 40.13$ a month. He asked his friend if he knew what the WPA was. He didn't know. That he said to his friend is government giving people hope. We aren't asking for a handout if you work hard you can make it in America. All we are asking for is hope. He went on to describe the things his father and the other workers built. A high school that is still in use today. A lake that is still in use today etc etc etc. I was very uplifting. Please vote for our democratic friends Mike Owen, Tom Fiegen,Dave Franker and Art Small.
