The race for president is essentially unchanged in Iowa since the Democratic National Convention, according to a new poll that shows Democratic nominee John Kerry narrowly ahead of President Bush.
The poll by Strategic Vision, an Atlanta-based political consulting and public relations firm, shows Kerry with support from 49 percent of Iowa voters and Bush with the support of 46 percent in a head-to-head matchup.
The poll, based on telephone interviews with 801 likely Iowa voters, was conducted July 31 to Aug. 3, and is the first measure of Iowa support for the candidates since the convention in Boston, which ended July 29. Kerry led Bush 48 percent to 46 percent in a poll conducted by the same firm from July 19 to 21. The poll has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
Strategic Vision's CEO and pollster David Johnson said Kerry seems to have received little lift from the convention, which featured four nights of party notables touting Kerry's candidacy. However, the poll's finding that only 5 percent of Iowans are undecided is a sign Iowa is as polarized as other battleground states.<snip>
"There's little room for bounce - for either of the candidates," Johnson said. "Most people have made up their minds and are not going to change."
