Sioux City East votes for Obama

And the winner is ...
Democrat Barack Obama defeated Republican John McCain, with a vote of 560-311, in East High School's mock election.

SIOUX CITY -- Brushing aside the pink highlights in her blond hair, Ericka Miller said she knows exactly who she wants to become the country's next president. "I'm so sick of Bush," Miller, an East High School sophomore, said Tuesday as she marked her ballot. "That's why I'm voting for Obama." Miller was among students who took part in a mock election conducted by East's Advanced Placement government class.

"This is something the kids wanted to do because this election year is so important," East Principal Richard Todd said.

Sharing their enthusiasm was government teacher Tracy Keefer. "Young people know they're in the lowest voting demographic, but this year, they want to change that and have their voices be heard," Keefer said. "We're using real ballot sheets and the votes will be tabulated by real voting machines on loan from the Woodbury County election office," Keefer said. "We've held mock elections in the past, but this is the first time kids will have a mock election seem so real."

------------------------
BTW - This is primarily the district of Chris Rants who may well lose to Carlos Veneble-Ridley. On a recent visit to Sioux City it is apparent that Carlos has the heat on Chris Rants and is poised to knock him off.

2. SIOUX CITY EAST??!!
:wow:

Sioux City is going blue is a shock enough. I thought East was the least likely of the city public schools to go Democratic. Well, either I was wrong or that is a good sign.

3. Uh Oh. Could this be a sign of things to come?
Hopefully some of that red will shift to purple and then to blue over the coming years.

4. Carlos
Having a great local candidate canvassing and getting the vote out is such a tremendous help, even up the ticket. A bubble up philosophy. In this case, Obama may trickle down to help Carlos. A pending tidal wave, perhaps?

6. Straw poll at Cedar Falls High
39% McCain, 5% other parties, and 56% Obama. People think that Cedar Falls is liberal because of UNI, but I think there are an awful lot of mostly prosperous conservatives. To be sure, there are a lot of liberal academics and blue-collar people but it's more conservative here than you might think. (I'm figuring the Sioux City East poll at 36% McCain, 54% Obama).
