Immigration shaping up as big issue in Indiana Senate race

Kevin Rader/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis - Immigration is one of the most contentious political issues in America, and it is turning into a major issue in the race for United States Senate in Indiana.

Illegal immigration is a hot button issue not only on the front line in the state of Arizona but right here in Indiana.

"There is only one person in this race and that is former Senator Dan Coats who voted to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants," said Brad Ellsworth (D-IN)

Senate candidate and Congressman Brad Ellsworth chided his Republican opponent for saying he was against illegal immigration while voting for amnesty in 1984.

"I will never vote to wave that wand and grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. People should come here and do it the right way by the path laid out in the rules," said Ellsworth.

Tell me once again, what is the difference to a Latino voter between Blue Dog Ellsworth, who also opposes LGBT rights, abortion rights, and repeal of DADT, and corrupt former lobbyist Dan Coats?

It is sad that it was Ellsworth who played the immigration card first.

1. Would a Republican controlled Senate
advance any of these issues? Dan Coats, if elected,
does NOT appear to be likely or willing
to do anything but serve those interests that have put
this nation in its worse financial crisis since the
Great Depression. I recall FDR's response when asked
why he tolerated corrupt party bosses and bigoted
southern Senators. He replied "I know they are
SOB's, but they are OUR SOB's. It is generally best
in any negotiation to settle for half-a-loaf than
nothing. That is, I believe, what Ellsworth offers,
as opposed to Coats who offers more of the same old
positions that created most of our current problems.

2. So when nothing really changes we can console ourselves that "our" SOB is in office.
No thanks.

3. With Dan Coats in the Senate
and McConnell as majority leader I'm sure you will see
changes. No Thanks!

4. The question is why?
Edited on Sun Sep-19-10 04:08 PM by plantwomyn
Why is illegal immigration such a hot button issue in Indiana? We all know that the fact is that they are only talking about the hispanics here illegally. The census shows that just over 5% of the population in Indiana is hispanic. Though I believe that the % is lower, lets say half are here illegally. That's 2.5% of Indiana's population. Seriously does anyone truly believe that this 2.5% are responsible for the majority of Indiana's woes?
Does anyone truly believe that giving this 2.5% amnesty is going to bring down the republic?

Got competency?

5. Cynical ploy.
Ellsworth knows his position will resonate with a lot of voters.
