POSTED: 4:37 pm EDT June 12, 2010

Visitation for Sgt. John Rankel, 23, of Speedway, will be on Friday at Emmanuel Church of Greenwood and next Saturday at Speedway High School. The funeral is also on Saturday at the school.

Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Rankel was killed on June 7 while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. He had served two tours in Iraq before being deployed to Afghanistan.

"The outpouring of prayers, well wishes and kindness has been amazing and very uplifting during an obviously difficult time," said Gary Raikes, spokesman for Rankel's family.

Rankel is the 30th Hoosier to be killed in action in Afghanistan.

Funeral held for Marine killed in Afghanistan

Updated: Jun 19, 2010 6:52 PM EDT

Hundreds of family, friends and fellow Marines have paid their final respects to an Indianapolis man killed in Afghanistan.

Twenty-three-year-old Marine Sgt. John K. Rankel was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery on Saturday. The burial followed a two-mile procession from his funeral at Speedway High School past people lining the route holding U.S. flags and other patriotic items.

The military says Rankel was killed June 7 in combat in Helmand province. Rankel's family has said he enlisted in the Marines in 2005 after graduating from the high school. He served two tours of duty in Iraq, then re-enlisted and was on his first tour in Afghanistan.
