Our position: Congressman has a disgraceful record of missing votes and accepting junkets.
Let's add up Dan Burton's scorecard.
Burton, who has represented Central Indiana in Congress for the past 24 years, racked up the worst record for participation in roll call votes last year among the state's congressional delegation. Burton bothered showing up to vote only 89 percent of the time in 2006. Even Rep. Julia Carson, whose critics have lambasted her in recent years for missing work, checked in for 91 percent of the votes. Burton has started the new year in similar fashion, missing 20 out of 73 House votes in January.
That's right, 5th District voters. Your congressman was too busy trading shots with celebrities and pro golfers to attend congressional hearings on Iraq and North Korea. He was so preoccupied with the importance of solid putting that he skipped a floor vote concerning the cost of college tuition.
So here's the score: Burton would rather play golf than attend a hearing on Iraq. He shows up for work less often than a 20-year-old slacker who refuses to move out of his parents' basement. He has little shame when it comes to accepting expensive gifts. And he feels immune from voters' wrath because he's been handed a heavily gerrymandered district that might as well hang up "Democrats need not apply'' signs. Sweet gig, Dan.
