(Marion County) Clerk-elect promises election reform
Reducing the number of precincts? Isn't that a sort of bad thing ?

Clerk-elect promises election reform

Marion County - County Clerk-Elect Beth White is talking about priorities as she prepares to take office in January. White has appointed a committee to look at election reform and another one to look at court administration and child support. Of the two proposed committees, the election reform committee is getting the most attention. White says she is not interested in appropriating blame, but rather, just in fixing the problems the community has encountered which she believes has led to credibility problems and ultimately lack of volunteers and interest. She highlighted her priorities.

"Preparing and urging a change in state law so that all absentee ballots received by the clerk's office by Election Day can be counted; number two, reducing the number of precincts in our community and number three; a meaningful plan to hold vendors accountable for challenges and problems we have with equipment and or other service they provide," said White.

White was asked why another proposal to reduce the number of precincts was not acted on by Mayor Bart Peterson in 2005. That recommendation was made by Republican incumbent Doris Anne Sadler. White says it lacked specifics.

1. Beth is going to clean things up!
I've spent some time with her during the most recent campaign season, and she is a very bright, straight-spoken lady. She doesn't mince words and truly wants to know how to make things better. She's been at every Dem Club meeting for months, listening to everyone's voting problems and issues, so I know she knows where the problems lie in the system.
I have great hope for her in this role. Once she cleans up this office, let's consider her for bigger things (prosecutor, perhaps or even Mayor, post-Bart).
Electing someone like Beth with so much spirit, energy and common sense gives me hope that our votes will indeed be counted!
Note to Doris Anne - you did a really crappy job with everything you touched - from customer service to getting the right ballots in our hands to not training poll workers. Good riddance! I hope we never have to deal with your lame ass again!

3. Yes! I did not know she won - this is EXCELLENT!
I am working with "Verify The Vote Indiana" and I contacted her by email last summer. We were not able to connect to talk then, but I will be contacting her IMMEDIATELY!

I am not sure about the wisdom of reducing polling places -- but I know that she has to do something drastic about hiring and training pollworkers. I was the state leader for "Pollworkers for Democracy" and the ONLY crisis phone calls I got from volunteers in Indiana were ALL from Indianapolis. People volunteered and then were never informed of their training date/time. People who went to training were intimidated by the iVotronics. People who worked election day were frustrated by all kinds of crap.

I am delighted to hear that Beth is taking charge! :applause:
