Senate OKs ban on gay marriages
Shit. I HATE these people.

The Indiana Senate voted overwhelmingly Monday to make a ban on same-sex marriages a part of the state constitution, shipping the controversial issue to the House. Senate Joint Resolution 7 was approved 42-8 after a brief debate. The measure is expected to pass the House easily, too.

After that, the always-emotional issue must be set aside. Amending the state constitution requires a second vote by a separately elected legislature, which could happen no earlier than 2007. Then the amendment would have to be approved by voters statewide, in November 2008 at the earliest.

Sen. Brandt Hershman, R-Wheatfield, the sponsor of the amendment, said the slowness of the process is appropriate. We do not rush to judgment today," he said. "We begin an orderly process of change."

An Indiana appeals court has upheld a state law that defines marriage as being between one man and one woman. But Hershman said that is not enough. The prohibition must be put in the constitution, he said, to prevent an "activist, overreaching judiciary" from imposing same-sex marriage or creating it in all but name.

1. This is pure and simple posturing
by the Repubs to have an issue on the ballot in 2008
that will attract the bible thumpers to the polls
again. We need a concerted effort to return control
of the House to Democrats in 2006. With hope that
the needed second passage of this stupid issue will
never happen. This is nothing more than an overblown
attempt to deny equal inheritance, property rights and
medical coverage to ones companions or partners of
choice. It has nothing to do with matrimony and so
called "family values." If that were the case then
a prohibition of divorce should also be a part of
our constitution. There is nothing more destructive
of families and family values than their disolution
by court decree.

2. Tonight I picked up Arthur Miller's "The Crucible"
(about the frenzy and histeria mixed with vengence and vendettas of the Salem Witch Hunt) - and it resonated with me in todays atmosphere. Did you see the short lived anti-AARP ad by the swiftboaties? Yes, because the AARP is against Bush's social security (abolition) efforts they are now an organization that is anti all things military and pro-gay marriage... wtf? Scary how the Crucible strikes home in a way that I don't think it would have in any other era of my life.

4. And Indiana wonders why in the hell...
Countless people leave the state after graduation from college. It's such a serious problem that people are bringing it up when talking about funding the universities. Some just don't think it is a good investment for the state, and they may be right but only because they chase people out of the state for good. Too bad.

11. How true!
Many college-educated Hoosiers can't wait to leave the state -- many because of legislation like this. They want to live in a state that values all people!

5. We may have to endorse a boycott of our own state
Organizing GLBTs is like herding cats. Except for strong communities in a handful of states, GLBT community is wrapped up into itself to become radicalized. Yet, the strongest weapon GLBTs have is to get other progressives to join them in a economic boycott of states that amend their constitutions making them second class citizens. For Indiana that means getting organizations to stay out of Indiana for their conventions, and boycotting Hoosier products.

13. So few manufacturers left here in Indiana...
but, hey, we've got Hillenbrand Industries (a.k.a. Batesville), a repug-focused company producing more caskets that anyone else -- that's a real growth market...aging baby boomers, war casualties, etc. And we also produce lots of hospital beds, too (not that anyone here can afford to be sick or actually pay for them...)

14. Here's what I want to know...
Who are all the so-called Democrats who voted for this? Yeha I know, scared for thier jobs. But only EIGHT Democrats with the spine to vote against this?

Also, will this amendment (if passed) have similar consequences as in Ohio that made domestic violence laws only apply to married couples and not live-in couples of any sex?
