Pantagraph: DeWitt County on poverty watch list
http://www.pantagraph.com/stories/030205/new_20050302061.shtml

"CLINTON -- DeWitt and Piatt counties are among the Illinois counties listed on the Poverty Watch List, according to a report released by the Illinois Poverty Summit.

Connie Keelin, administrator of the DeWitt-Piatt Bi-County Health Unit, said DeWitt County's place on the watch list was not unexpected.

"I'm not surprised that DeWitt County is on the list. We're seeing more people in DeWitt County in greater need of our services," said Keelin.

The closure of several major employers in the past two to three years is the main reason more people in the community need help, said Keelin."

In an unrelated story, DeWitt county voted for Bush with 63% of the vote. At least they voted for Obama with 59% of the vote.

1. I find it hard to believe they went 59 for Obama and 63 for Bush.
Diebold?

2. Look at Obama's opponent
My fiance's parents are die-hard republicans and they couldn't even bring themselves to vote for Keyes.

3. Not Diebold.
That happened a LOT in central Illinois. Even the Repubs had a hard time stomaching Keyes, and Obama ran a positive campaign and spent a LOT of time down here.

5. And downstaters are just more likely to split their ticket
You don't have as many straight-ticket party line voters like in Chicago or Dupage County.

6. True as well
I grew up in the First Ward and later in Oak Lawn, then came down here for school. It works differently here than it does at home, most definitely.

7. Just to add onto that and I'm sure you know this Paddy
But I just wanted to say that Keyes only won 7 of Illinois' 108 or so counties.

8. Yep.
Even the Repubs couldn't stomach him, and that's saying something.

9. He had some of his biggest support here.
I think I read somewhere that outside the counties he won, Keyes received the largest percentage of the vote in Winnebago County than any of the others he lost. I can't tell you how many Keyes yard signs I saw on the east side of Rockford. I'd been down in southern Illinois days before the election and I didn't see near as many there.
