Thinking about coming out for the meet-up

I am thinking of maybe coming out that way for the Chicago meet-up and I thought I would come here to ask if any of you have some suggestions.
I will probably drive and my buddy might come out with me. I am on a pretty tight budget these days so I would need a cheaper hotel. I also don't want to have to drive too much in the city for two reasons, 1) I don't want to have a few drinks in me and get popped and 2)I am terrible with directions,I get lost going up and down stairs.
I don't know for sure that I can make it, but I would like to get out that way. So if any of you have any suggestions that might be helpful, I would be appreciative of them. Thanks.
