Obama takes 16-point lead in new poll
By Lauren Shepherd

Illinois Democratic Senate candidate Barack Obama is leading Republican Jack Ryan by a 16-point margin in a Wilson Research Strategies (WRS) poll conducted earlier this month.

Obama, a state senator, and Ryan, an investment banker and teacher, are competing to replace Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-Ill.). The race is one of eight open Senate contests this year.

In the independent survey of 400 registered voters in the state, Obama received 44 percent of the vote while Ryan garnered 28 percent. Eighteen percent of those surveyed were undecided.

The survey also shows that both candidates had strong support from their party bases, with Obama receiving the support of 79 percent of Democrats and Ryan winning 71 percent of the Republican vote.

2. Don't Fall Asleep
Yes Obama has a 16 point lead right now. Democrats and Independents better not fall asleep and let this lead slip away. Instead capitalize on it and build on Obama's popularity. With some coordinated effort by volunteers, Melissa Bean could capture Crane's seat and Christine Cegelis could capture Hyde's.

Crane is particularly vulnerable considering he does nothing in his district.

If everyone sits back and coasts on Obama's current lead a great opportunity will be missed. This is the year to work harder.
