1. Not in the district but I've been volunteering
for Quigley. He has a great record as a progressive reformer and he has a good shot at winning.

2. What are your thoughts on Geoghegan?...He's been endorsed
by many high-profile progressive organizations and individuals..The Nation, DFA and Joe Conason for a few.

3. He sounds good
but he doesn't seem like someone who's likely to win. I worry that he'll split the progressive reform vote and hand the election to Frithcy, the machine backed lobbyist for the Bankers Association. Geoghegan seems like the trendy net candidate but I don't see how he wins.

4. Interesting....I didn't know that Quigley was a progressive...I heard that
Sara Feigholtz (spelling?)was the other progressive, but that she was "dubious" in some way, so I decided to support Geoghegan.

Why do you think Quigley is likely to win?...That is always, of course, an important consideration! If I think he's more likely, I'll throw my support over to him...We need to get a progressive of some kind in there.

5. Well
I think Feigholtz has a good record too, from what I've read. Quigley has been more outspoken about government reform, the environment and most progressive issues. He has more name recognition in the district than anyone else running, a big volunteer base, and the Sun-Times endorsement. Geoghegan is a new face that's basically starting from scratch compared to the bigger names in the race like Fritchey, Feigholtz and Quigley.

6. I went to Quigley's website..and the only thing I did NOT see that
worried me a bit was anything about Labor..Nothing, nada.

Geoghegan is a labor lawyer -- and seems to be nationally known. Whether that's enough to get him elected, I don't know.

10. Of course, anyone who gets the nom in that district will have the seat for 20 years
so didn't this just end the story for Geoghegan and Feigholtz? What else is open to them now?

8. the local dfa endorsed 5 candidates
none of the candidates met the criteria to be "adopted" by northside dfa. 5 candidates were endorsed. geoghegan was one. he seems to be a good candidate, and has some passionate supporters. he doesn't have much money, tho.

sara feigenholz has a good shot, as she has a lot of money, and was the only woman in the race for a while. she has the 46th ward organization behind her, as well as a some others of the powers that be. i, personally, like her. she was a co-sponsor of a bill to impeach bush and cheney that was introduced in the illinois house a few years ago. it was one of those last minute, hail mary sort of bills, but still...

quigley has a lot of support from individual dfa'ers that i know. he has been a great friend to the local dfa. very accessible, and very supportive. a really good guy. i think the only problem that a lot of progressives have is that they feel he is so needed on the county board.

i think the only one of the top candidates that would bother anyone is fritchey. because he is the machine guy.

9. Well, it's not surprising that you'd support Quigley
Edited on Wed Mar-04-09 07:18 PM by Ken Burch
You have the habit of always opposing the progressive candidate in the race, even though there's no reason to do that in this case.

Does Quigley even care about labor?

Is there any good reason to say nothing about labor in your website(as Quigley did)? I don't think any Democratic district in the Chicago area could actually be considered hostile or indifferent to unions.

I guess I don't know why he's the best choice in an unloseable district. He's probably blandly vaguely ok, but was there a reason to settle for that? Why not go with the passion and the commitment for once?

The last thing that district needs is another Rahm.

And I'd be happy for Quigley to prove me wrong.

It just seems like an unnecessary compromise to choose him.

12. That's a very ignorant statement.
1) I don't know when you think I've opposed progressive candidates unless you're one of those people who still think Obama is secretly a conservative who loves Reagan. If you're one of those people, pay more attention.

2) Quigley was the progressive in the race with a decent shot at winning and Geoghegan was never likely to be more than a spoiler, which he nearly was. After the election, it's clear that my comments above were exactly correct.

Voting Quigley didn't take compromise. He's the progressive reformer with a real record to back up his ideals. I've known about him and several of the other candidates for a long time. I didn't just read about this race on a few blogs last month.

7. We are for Tom, too. He is a tremendous person and would be a wonderful
representative for the 5th in Congress. He is the only progressive candidate in the race.

Toes and fingers are crossed!

11. Geoghehan got 7%. Quigley the vague mystery guy won for some reason
Hope he turns out to be worth it.

The Fifth could've had better.

No reason to nominate someone who says nothing about labor.

13. Geoghegan was the vague mystery guy
without a record who was mostly known online. Quigley was the known progressive in Chicago. You should stop writing about races far away from you that you obviously know nothing about.

14. i thought i answered this accusation for you.
he says nothing about labor on his website because his position on the county board makes him responsible for the contracts of several unions in county agencies. things that he said on the campaign trail, had he lost, would be presented to him the next time he had to negotiate a contract.
he had strong support among the local labor unions that know him by his actions, not by the content of his website.

and believe it or not, there is often a bit of distance between the content of a website and the content of a human being represented there. strange but true.
