Massive voter registration purging reported in Illinois
Is this why McCain is smirking? Why aren't the Democrats screaming from the rooftops?

CBS News: New Study Details Massive Voter Roll Purges Underway in At Least 19 States

Tonight's CBS Evening News finally covered what may well be the November Surprise that we've been trying to warn about for months here at The BRAD BLOG: Massive voter roll purges being done in secret, with little or no oversight, and often under federal Justice Department cover, in states and counties around the country.

And the Democrats, who likely have the most to lose via such secret purges, are doing little or nothing about it.

*snip*

We've yet to read this Brennan report, but the brief coverage from tonight's Evening News notes 10,000 voters purged in Mississippi, 21,000 in Louisiana and "to top it off, another new study discovered 19 states are ignoring federal law (the National Voter Registration Act), banning systematic purges within 90 days of a federal election."

Among those 19, are a number of battleground states. The report lists: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Delware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Masachusetts, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington, as places where massive purges have recently taken place.

1. I hope the lack of responses to this article...
...is indicative that all of you are too busy calling your local election officials to find out how many voters have been purged in your jurisdiction since November 2006 and reporting the news in any manner possible -- newspaper, blogs, posters, flyers, paper airplanes, etc.

Voter disenfranchisement was how Bush took the White House both in 2000 and 2004. No telling how many state and local races have been impacted.

This topic gets to the very heart of why we are Democrats.

I sure hope enough people catch on before it's too late.

2. hmm...I wonder...

my wife got something from our county about early voting...I haven't. Maybe I need to make sure I haven't been purged- though I can't imagine any justification for it whatsoever, even on pretense.

Additionally...something I wondered about with that...on the card, it says:
"Bring ID: In an effort to prevent vote fraud and double voting, state law requires early voters to display valid identification to an election official before receiving a ballot to vote early. Valid forms of ID include: a current driver's license, state-issued ID card or another government-issued ID with a photograph."

Is this true? It may be, just that there's been a lot of talk about voter intimidation through bogus ID requirements being stated, so I want to be sure.

4. that is correct
just for early voting, tho. it is a wise idea to make sure you have some id with you when you vote, tho. in chicago, anyway, i think they give you a pink application for ballot for 3 elections before they remove you. if you have a pink application, you will have to show current proof of address. a piece of mail is fine for that.

5. I did go and check my status online
and I am listed as a registered voter, so that looks fine.

good to know, too, that the ID requirement is legit

3. EVERYONE...CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION STATUS!!!
Oct. 6th is the deadline to register. If you've been wrongfully purged, you have a grace period until Oct. 20th to be reinstated. Don't take your voter registration status for granted, even if you've been voting in the same precinct for years!

Check on-line and/or call your local election board.

Spread the word.

7. There are several ways to check your registration status...
* First, there are several national voter registration database websites such as this:

http://www.canivote.org/

* Second, your county election board *may* have a webpage to check your status. Just do a search to find your county government, then search for your election board. Smaller, less-populated counties may not offer this feature.

* Third, call your election board. I *strongly* suggest you back up any on-line searches with a phone call. Document the complete name of the person who assisted you, along with the date and the time.

IF YOUR FIND THAT YOU'RE REGISTERED ON-LINE, I advise you to print out the page and place it in a safe place you can easily find on election day...just in case. In Ohio 2004, voters were purged the week prior to the election -- a clear violation of the NVRA and a felony...not that anyone cares or that it will be enforced.

8. I have. Everything is ok. In fact, I'm voting on Monday.
The first day of early voting. :-)
