Illinois County Clerks Welcome Election Reform Bill

County Clerks all over Illinois are breathing a sigh of relief with the passage of Senate Bill 662. SB662, which is officially called the Omnibus Elections Bill which will bring immediate help to county clerks as they prepare for the February 5 primary election.

This bill was passed by the Illinois General Assembly and signed by the governor on November 9. In essence the bill streamlines some of the election processes and helps reduce the costs connected with elections.

Another important provision of this bill is the elimination of nonpartisan and consolidated primary elections. This cost saving measure will apply if there are fewer than four candidates seeking each post or five candidates if a write-in candidate is involved.

Those elections were held in odd-numbered years and involved municipalities such as Shelbyville and Windsor. In fact this bill abolishes primaries in municipalities under the commission form of government. Both Windsor and Shelbyville have that form of government.
