Pastor didn't believe story she was molested, Elgin authorities allege

By Jeff Long and Ofelia Casillas, Tribune staff reporters. Freelance reporter Mark Shuman contributed to this report
Published May 12, 2006

The pastor of an Elgin church has been charged with battery after it was alleged that he repeatedly used a piece of wood to discipline a 12-year-old girl.
Police said the girl's mother took her to the pastor because she doubted the girl's claim that she was being sexually abused by another man.

Elgin police said Thursday they believe the girl's original allegations are true. On Wednesday they charged Daryl Bujak, 30, pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church, with misdemeanor battery. He was released after posting $500 bail. He has a June 16 court appearance in the Elgin branch of Kane County Circuit Court, said police Lt. Mike Turner.

Matthew E. Resh, 33, of Ingleside, was charged this week by police in far north suburban Richmond with five counts of predatory criminal sexual assault. The girl was sexually abused between September 2003 and March 2005, according to a complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court.
(snip)

"When a kid gets up the courage after being sexually abused to tell a parent, that means that it is a cry for help," Harris said. "They won't say help anymore if they are taught that when you say help you might get punished, you might get beaten for it."

Ronald Davidson, a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Chicago's department of psychiatry, said if the charges are true, the girl was "betrayed three times"--by the adult who abused her, her mother and then the pastor.

Here's the email I sent the "pastor" yesterday and here's his website: http://www.fmbc.net/

Right on, Pastor Bujak!

Good for you for trying to whup the Satan out of that lying little girl. How dare she sass her elders like that. When Jesus said "suffer the little children to come unto me" He didn't mean let them go around talking dirty talk, he meant make them suffer. Yes sir, what Christianity needs is a lot less loving and a lot more butt whuppin. Elsewise that little girl might grow up to be a Liberal, or even worse a Lesbian! Why it sounds like she already hates men. Time was when a girl that age would have been married and pregnant by now. Those were the good old days.
Now I'm sure some disbelievers are going to say you got some vicarious pleasure out of those spank sessions, but don't you listen. I'm sure it hurt you just as much as it hurt that little liar. And I hope that nice Mr. Resh fellow isn't sent to prison. After all he has been a good contributor to your church, hasn't he? If he is though, I'll be praying for him and sending him cookies.
In conclusion, it sounds like your little church there must be having the trials of Job right now. Well, the trials at least. I hope your flock sees through all this worldliness and keeps showing up and filling that collection plate because brother, it sounds like you're going to need it. If not, give them a good butt whuppin for me and Jesus.

Your friend in Christ,
Xeric

5. sick. this pastor used corporal punishment-!

... Bujak told the parents that she was lying and privately disciplined the girl on Wednesday evenings between March and May of 2005. The girl, now 13, was struck with a 3-foot strip of wood molding, causing welts and bruises on her legs and buttocks, according to police and the girl's mother.

"He took her in the ladies room, across from his office," the mother said in an interview Thursday. "I was downstairs in the Fellowship Hall." Afterward, the mother said, "Her face was red, and I could see that she'd been crying."

17. Into the ladies room, no less.
He should receive as much time as the relative who abused her.

And her mother ought to be placed in the care of a court-appointed therapist. I'll bet she was abused herself as a child, and received the same sort of "counseling" afterward.

26. I always see the "paddling" of kids by adults on the buttocks
as more than faintly sexual. And no, parents, I'm not accusing you of incest. I mean situations like this, a principal, etc. I bet good money most of them get off on this in some way. It has always disturbed me.

Plus, I consider it assault. Juts because someone is under 18 doesn't change it from assault to proper discipline. Sorry.

7. I Suppose the Abuser Was a "Fine, Upstanding Member of the Church"
Where does it say in the Bible that it's OK to bugger little children,
and then to beat them when they tell anyone about it?

This is getting well beyond the "isolated incidents" stage by now.

Police: Pastor paddled girl who claimed abuse
Mom doubted allegations against relative, took teen to cleric for counseling

Updated: 6:22 p.m. ET May 12, 2006
ELGIN, Ill. - A pastor was charged with spanking a 13-year-old girl with a piece of wood because he thought she was lying when she said she was sexually abused by a relative.

Police said the Rev. Daryl Bujak struck the girl hard enough to cause bruises and welts after she was brought to him for counseling because her mother doubted the claims.

Officials said they believe the girl's allegations of sexual abuse, and this week authorities in McHenry County charged a 33-year-old man with abusing her from September 2003 until March 2005.
(snip)

"I feel terrible," said the mother. "I feel like a heel. I didn't know."

15. here's a choice quote from the mother
The mother, who home-schools the girl, said her daughter is in private counseling and no longer attends the Elgin church. "We're just working on trying to rebuild our relationship," the mother said. "Because our relationship was built on lies and deception."

that he is beat with a piece of wood in front of the fundie flock he administers to. The mother should have known better than to turn her daughter over to this fiend.

13. But these sort of people don't know.
The media and government have brainwashed people into believing that they must be subserviant to religious authority.

I hope the mother has learned a lesson she will never forget, but you can't blame her for her initial stupidity. That sort of ignorance is carefully fostered in our society and is a tragedy for the mother as well as the daughter.

24. And my mother used to belt me like that for telling her
that I was being abused, and she was an atheist who went to church to set an example to other people who needed to be taught "proper morals".

No, you're right, religion is not always the culprit, and country Christianity where I grew up was tempered with humour and a natural Australian skepticism. I've never personally known of a preacher who was taken seriously here, except for the only one I knew who didn't take himself seriously, and spent all his energy looking after those in need.

And reading the mother's later remarks shows that she really is a hypocritical bitch.

Her pastor's prompt and proper attention would have saved her many years of hell.

Something like this happened to Susan Smith. Her upstanding deacon stepfather raped her for many years... and denied it when she told other people about it. That doesn't excuse her mured5ering her kids, but it does throw and interesting "twist" into her background.

19. Goddammit....
...when a CHILD says they've been sexually abused, usually they HAVE and adults ought to take such allegations VERY seriously. WTF is WRONG with this girl's mother?

This poor kid. She certainly WAS betrayed. She ought to be taken from her "parents" and put in a decent, caring home AWAY from freaks, religous nuts, and pedophiles.

This is absolutely DESPICABLE!
