DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett polled strongly in a four-way race for lieutenant governor Tuesday, while the Democratic Party's chosen candidate for treasurer struggled against a Chicago banker who won the backing of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.

With 39 percent of precincts reporting in the lieutenant governor's race, Birkett was outdueling GOP rival Steve Rauschenberger, a state senator from Elgin, 49 percent to 30 percent.

In the treasurer's race, Alexi Giannoulias, who challenged the party's choice, Knox County State's Attorney Paul Mangieri, was winning 59 percent to 41 percent with 39 percent of precincts reporting.

Birkett, the running mate of front-running gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka, was leading a pack that also included Kane County Recorder Sandy Wegman, who had 14 percent, and Thomson businessman Lawrence Bruckner, who had 7 percent.
