This Duckworth thing is getting ridiculous
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 02:33 PM by minvis
Check out Lynn Sweet's column here.

http://www.suntimes.com/output/sweet/cst-nws-sweet25.html

A fundraiser yesterday for Duckworth, organized by Rahm Emanuel, was going to be held at a lobbying firm in D.C. and then quickly switched when it was made public. This is something that can totally undermine the Democrats efforts to paint the Republicans as "the" problem with lobbying and corruption.

On another note, it should be noted that Cegalis received the local chapter of the IVI-IPO endorsement and Duckworth was a no-show due to this fundraiser. The other candidate, Lindy Scott, did appear and from all accounts made a good showing.

If there is any question which candidate, Cegalis or Duckworth, is the progressive, independent candidate, this should clear things up. It just shows that Duckworth has no interest in getting this endorsement.

2. Why would Duckworth bother after Simpson's Op-ed?
This decision was made a while back. Duckworth is running as a Democratic candidate.

7. It's archived at the Sun Times.
They charge a fee once it's archived. If you want to check at a library or want to pay it's Nov. 29, 2005 page 39.
Here is what is on the archive listing of the Sun Times.

Excerpt:
Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) should quit playing games and support Christine Cegelis for Congress. Cegelis is running for the second time for Henry Hyde's seat in the suburban 6th District that includes northeast DuPage County and northwest Cook County. As Sun-Times columnist Lynn Sweet reported, Emanuel courted Army Major "Tammy" Duckworth to run as the Democratic candidate. He cynically believes that people will vote for her just because she is a wounded...<snip

8. How important is the IVI-IPO endorsement in the 6th. . .
. . .it would be very interesting to look at previous endorsements they have made in the 6th CD and see how does candidates have fared. I live in the city and I think the IVI-IPO is important to candidates here but I'm not sure of its impact in the 6th CD.

10. Here's what I found
As far as recent endorsements in the 6th Congressional District, Cegalis was endorsed in 2004. There was no endorsement in the 6th District in 2002 and I was unable to find any endorsements in 2000.

As far as the impact, who knows? But my opinion is that for a primary, it has a lot more influence. I'm sure you would agree that primary voters, by and large, are more motivated and tend to more of the activist types that vote then rather than in the general election when a more diverse group comes out to vote.

I guess we'll see how much of an impact it has this time. This has to be one of the first times in recent memory that there has been a competitive race in the Democratic primary for this district. Before, I think they just left it as a no-win seat when Hyde was there.

12. Nil
if you're running in and about the lakefront, the IVI-IPO endorsement might be of some use to you. Outside of the Hyde Park - Evanston Corridor (and largely in-between), it is net zero. No cash, no name recognition.

3. check this thread from this morning
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=233766&mesg_id=233948

she is just up the road from me. the national party has no interest in anyone else`s district but they stick their nose in cegalis run because they feel she`s weak? this time she would be running against an unknown republican? that`s right force an unknown war hero on the local dems who have been fighting for years against all odds...screw the national party and their stooges.

4. He's not an unknown Republican.
He is an Illinois State Senator from that District. He has backing from the White House in a strong GOP area. He is likely a much stronger candidate than Hyde. This is not the national party and their stooges, it's the Illinois Democratic Party. If Cegelis is not weak she will win the Primary.

5. thanks for the info
i have never read anything about who is running on the republican side and this does change my views somewhat on this issue. no matter who and what it still boils down to who the voters want to represent them..

9. this is about principle, not personalities, or even
progressives v corporate toadies.
i want my party to have primaries on a level playing field. especially races for the people's house. all you rahm apologists who end all your posts with "if cegelis is strong (or whatever) she will win"
well, yes, if she is strong enough to climb us a steep slope to knock off someone who was airdropped to the top, she will win. how democratic is that?
do you really think that only the republicans are handing this country over to the rich and powerful? does this really look to you like government by the people?
get real. that's all i can say to you. get real.
