Craig: some Gulf areas should be abandoned
Idaho Republican Sen. Larry Craig's suggestion to return a New Orleans neighborhood to wetlands and charges of widespread corruption there raised the ire Friday of Louisiana Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu.

"Louisiana and New Orleans are the most corrupt governments in our country and they always have been," Craig was quoted in the Star News in McCall Thursday. "A rookie cop on the ground in New Orleans, they pay him or her $17,000 starting pay and then wink and say you better make the rest of it on the street."

He told the Lewiston Tribune in an interview published Friday that some areas of the Gulf, including New Orlean's flooded 9th Ward, should be abandoned.

"I'm not humorous when I suggest we should turn it back to what it was, a wetland," he told the Tribune.

1. No shit, huh?
I'm reading a book right now called 'Bayou Goodbye' - I think; it's in the other room. The gist is that those who make their living off the water down there want the Mississippi to be allowed to flood because it would resurrect the wetlands and the sediment necessary to establish refuge for seafood .... shrimp, crayfish, etc.

Regardless - Craig is still an extraordinary dick.

2. One of Craig's "workers" or
whatever you call her, is in a few of my classes. Would it be inappropriate if I asked her when Craig is coming out of the closet?

3. Statesman editorial from today
Sen. Larry Craig wants the taxpayers' hurricane recovery dollars spent wisely — and we agree with him.

But it's another thing for Craig to go out of his way to insult the people of Louisiana.

By bringing up Louisiana's unsavory history of political corruption, Craig, R-Idaho, manages to offend people recovering from natural disaster and undermine his own case for accountability.

Craig pulled off this twofer last week with a series of insensitive remarks made during a swing through Idaho.
