Person Shot Near U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON - A U.S. Capitol Police officer shot a person at New Jersey Avenue NW and C Street NW, blocks from the Capitol, according to law enforcement sources.

It happened just after 5:15 p.m.

Witnesses say a white Mercedes was traveling at a high rate of speed away from Union Station toward a Capitol parking area, where the vehicle crashed into a barricade. That's when gunfire erupted, witnesses said.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Pete Piringer said the wounded person was a civilian, who had been shot by a U.S. law enforcement agency. Sources say it was U.S. Capitol Police.

The wounded person was taken to the hospital for treatment. The person's condition was not immediately available.

1. First question you should ask in these situations: where's Cheney?

5. Nutball? Or just another incident?
My first reaction is to think it's a right wing nutball, but it could just be some average, run of the mill criminal who just happened to be near the capitol.

6. Probably someone
who couldn't figure out what lane to get into to get back to Union Station.

That area is a traffic nightmare, and all the barricades that are up now have made it so damn ugly. We used to be able to walk right up to the National Christmas Tree, and now, yeah, try finding a parking place.

A total drag.............................

13. How soon before we find out A) he is a Freeper B) he belongs to a white
supremacist group, and C) has made threatening remarks to either President Obama or towards Judge Sotomayor?

I will bet $50 which I will donate to DU if I am wrong.

It would not surprise me in the least if the deceased was a Freeper and/or a member of some far-right group.

16. You're welcome ...

FYI the photo published in the Colombian newspaper that highlights the U.S. Capitol in the background was from the official Spanish news agency EFE.

The AP was late to get the ball rolling, because its photos in the Yahoo article are lousy.

<The prior run-in may help explain why 27-year-old Kellen Anthony White fled from a traffic stop Wednesday near the Capitol.

Maryland court records show White of Brandywine was on supervised probation for gun charges, assault upon a police officer, and drug charge convictions last year in Prince George's County.
