Senator Piedad Córdoba, Danilo Rueda and Iván Cepeda Castro

Date: Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Venue: TransAfrica Forum Arthur Ashe, Jr. Foreign Policy Library,1629 K Street, NW, Suite 1100 Washington, DC 20006

Please join Senator Piedad Córdoba and two noted human rights activists, Danilo Rueda and Ivan Cepeda, for an in-depth update on the human rights situation in Colombia, with an emphasis on the peace and justice process and the situation of Afro-Colombians.

Details: Following the demobilization of Colombia’s paramilitary groups 7 years ago, a Justice and Peace Law was passed that calls for the full investigation of the many killings of civilians and other crimes perpetrated by the paramilitaries, and the subsequent compensation of the victims and families of the victims of these crimes. Afro-Colombians, along with the country’s indigenous community have been the hardest hit by the ongoing civil conflict.

Senator Piedad Cordoba is a well known political leader in Colombia, and is the head of the multi-partisan, ad-hoc Committee for the 14 Extradited and Colombians for Peace. She is an advocate for Afro-Colombian and Women’s issues.

Danilo Rueda is a prominent human rights activist and journalist, and a representative of the Colombian civil society organization Justice and Peace.

Iván Cepeda Castro is the director of the National Movement for Victims of State Crimes, an umbrella organization of more than 200 Colombian human rights organizations, and is also a columnist for the Colombian newspaper El Espectador.

The Event is Free and Open to the Public! Drinks will be served
