World Can't Wait Hawai`i Newsletter

March 9, 2006

YOUR GOVERNMENT, on the basis of outrageous lies, is waging a murderous and utterly illegitimate war in Iraq, with other countries in their sights.
March 19 marks the 3rd anniversary of the war on Iraq. The World Can't Wait movement will be joining in the Global Days of Action that the U.S. get out of Iraq - NOW. In Honolulu, join the protest organized by Not In Our Name-Hawai`i on Saturday, March 18. Gather in the front of the Honolulu Zoo (corner of Kalakaua and Kapahulu) at 6 pm for a rally, and join us at the march at 7 pm. This is going to be a march through the streets of Waikiki (Kuhio and Kalakaua). Bring an attitude, your voices, signs and noisemakers! (Sorry for the repost of this section folks, I didn't want to break the integrity of this newsletter-The Dharma)

YOUR GOVERNMENT is moving to deny women here, and around the world, the right to birth control and abortion.
What many said could never happen just did. South Dakota has banned abortion, and other states are gearing up to do the same.
The South Dakota law only makes an exception in cases where a woman's life is at risk (not for rape or incest), prohibits the sale of emergency contraception, and claims that life begins at fertilization. Doctors who perform abortion would be charged with a crime.

This is truly a state of emergency for the lives and rights of women. If this law is upheld, it will consign many women to dangerous back-alley abortions. This nightmare is not a future we can accept. Now is the time to act.

Your government is moving each day closer to a theocracy, where a narrow and hateful brand of Christian fundamentalism will rule.
Homeland Security just opened a "faith-based intitiative" office to give money to Christian fundamentalist groups for Katrina relief efforts. What most see as an outrage, with a city devestated and tens of thousands of people still in need of money, housing, and jobs, the Bush regime sees as an opportunity to for furthering moves toward theocracy. Far-right religious institutions like the Family Research Council and Pat Robertson's Operation Blessing will be receiving even more government money to push their narrow and hateful brand of Christian fundamentalism on Katrina survivors.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg! Consider that during the past week:

* Bush signed the bill renewing the USA PATRIOT ACT - with NO major changes!

* The Supreme Court ruled that military recruiters must be allowed on college campuses. To deny recruiters access would cut off all federal funding to the college.

* Missouri is trying to pass a new law making Christianity the official state religion. The religious rights of christians would be upheld; the religious rights of those with other faiths would not be.

* Fred Phelps, a fanatical Christian fundamentalist, brought his family out this past Saturday to protest the funeral of a soldier killed in Iraq because Phelps claims that the soldiers are fighting for a country that accepts homosexuality.

We must ACT!

This country is heading in a fascist direction, and only WE can stop it! Join the World Can't Wait movement! Join our contingent on March 18th! Protest every every day! Use your voice to educate others about what's happening. Use your body as a billboard - wear a political T-shirt, a button, a sticker.

Join us every thursday evening to make plans for protests, conferences, forums, speak-outs, postering, street theatre and more. Our first regular meeting will be next thursday (March 16) at 7 pm at Coffee Talk. And we'll be meeting every week after that. We'll have posters, leaflets and hand-outs available at the meeting. Mark your calendar!
