Ex-wife says candidate made intimidating call
By JIM THARPE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/11/04

U.S. Senate candidate Cliff Oxford, trying to neutralize domestic violence allegations by his second wife, now has been accused by his first wife of trying to browbeat her family into silence.

Oxford's second ex-wife, Caryn Oxford, has said she will support his candidacy despite their acrimonious divorce, which included allegations of domestic abuse. But Oxford's first ex-wife, Christie Oxford, will not be cheering his high-profile run for office.

Christie Oxford, 42, said in an interview this week that she received an "intimidating" three-minute telephone message three weeks ago from her ex-husband, an entrepreneur who made millions with his former computer services company, STI Knowledge Inc.

Oxford denies trying to intimidate her or her family and said he called her as a courtesy.

1. What is it with these right wingers?
Why the serial polygamy? Can't they manage to hold on to a marriage? If they can't manage to cope with a marriage, how can we expect them to cope with running the country?

Just asking.

2. Actually, he is a Democrat
And he is making outsourcing the cornerstone of his campaign. That doesn't sound like a right-wiger to me.

3. the most depressing Democratic primary in Georgia since 1980...
In that race Zell Miller and Democratic incumbent Herman Talmadge ripped each other to shreds, as candidates like Norman Underwood took potshots at both of them along the way. And even as Talmadge emerged again as the nominee, most voters understood during those fateful primaries..that Talmadge was already doomed.

And now we have plenty of candidates, but little support for them. One will be nominated, but can this person be elected? Why vote in the Democratic Primary if none will win in November? It is just as logical to vote in the Republican primary for the candidate most likely to take votes away from the two front-runners. Using this logic, a Republican runoff would at least level the playing field.

Would a Republican runoff help the Democratic candidate?

4. I have some real questions about this thing...
I read this article when it first appeared in the paper last week. I was unable to read the linked version. I hate this garbage where I have to login for everything. I pay those people to deliver the paper I shouldn't have an annoyance to re-read the damn article. Anyway. The transcripts they printed in the paper did not sound like an intimidating phone call to me. If he did try to intimidate her, I would think fairly low of him. Being he is accused of spousal abuse, I am a little suspect anyway. From what I remember reading he basically said, I hope you will abide by the terms of our agreement. At the end of the call, he asked her to call him back. From what I read there wasn't anything there. I think his ex-wife, one of them, is planning to working for one of the repugs running for senate. After reading the headline I was expecting a much different article than I read. I really expected something to back up the claim of intimidation, but I didn't find it. If I missed something, please pass it on, thanks...Kevin.

7. Reasons?
I don't particularly like this guy, but why is he so much worse than the others? Someone have pictures of him raping someone's grandmother while shooting a spotted owl over her shoulder?

8. perhaps because he has the financial resources to win this race...
If he did these terrible things so be it, but Repukes will paint everyone of the other Democrats the same color unless we begin to fight back.

9. what he said on the message...
When I first saw this post, I didn't have the article in front of me. According to the article this is the "intimidating" comments he made, or atleast quoted by the ajc. This is every quote contained in the message printed in the paper version of the ajc.

"Mine and your agreement is very clear...how we should conduct ourselves and our families should conduct ourselves." "If one of my family members was doing that, I would consider that myself, not one of my family members".

"Hey, Christie, this is Cliff." "I know this is difficult, but I also think it's very important. I'm getting a lot of information back to me that your family members are manufacturing comments and overtures I would like for you and me to discuss. I'd just like to wish you the best."

These are his comments from the ajc. Does anyone else consider this an intimidating message?? I really don't. I am trying. I just can't. His ex-wife also made this comment "He is a bully, and he was calling to intimidate me" "I haven't slept through the night in three weeks. It's very, very stressful". Again, I don't understand what was so intimidating about that message that would cause this woman not to be able to sleep for three weeks. Granted, if her family did make nasty things up, and spread them through the media, I would understand her sweating the fall-out. Oddly, this message was left on her answering machine three weeks ago, and it is just now making the paper. One of the last quotes in the article from Christie Oxford "I may go volunteer for Isakson".

You decide if she has an axe to grind, or motives for running this story. Unless he said other things in the message that were not reported, I think this is a smear tactic. Any chance to bring up this guys name with nasty allegations is a chance worth taking. He may be a bad guy, but I think this story is garbage, just the type we all expect from the 'librul' media to make a dem look bad. Huh?? ...Kevin.

10. I think it's hard to gauge
..because it's just being read and not hearing the inflection that was used. Besides, that's only one call. I'm more concerned about what's in the divorce papers that he desparately wants kept out of the public.
