The way Bob Kanjian sees it, the County Commission is spending too much taxpayer money, has been AWOL on affordable housing and treats the public with contempt.

Meet Palm Beach County's new commissioner, who called his appointment Friday a "coup d'etat" — at least a philosophical one.

Gov. Charlie Crist chose the first-term School Board member to fill ex-Commissioner Warren Newell's seat on the county's seven-member, premier policy-making board. Newell has signed a plea deal that could send him to prison for five years on public corruption charges, the second veteran commissioner in less than a year to resign in disgrace.

The governor, who interviewed seven finalists two days earlier, released a statement Friday noting Kanjian's private-sector resume. He owns Building Solutions LLC, a West Palm Beach real estate and title company.
