Even gecko outshone by Crist's green
Even gecko outshone by Crist's green
St. Petersburg Times, 11/11

Did Charlie Crist win the 2006 election for governor? Or did he buy it?

Of all the numbers from the campaign, none is as staggering in its scope as the $40-million raised by the Republican Party in September and October.

Six-figure checks, day after day, from Disney, Princess Tours, Clear Channel Outdoor, Palm Beach Kennel Club and U.S. Sugar, to name a few, all to help in the first mass marketing of a Florida governor.

That $40-million, which was also spent helping other Republican candidates, is on top of the $20-million Crist raised in hard-dollar amounts of $500 or less, plus tax money from the public financing program.

1. Mass marketing produced mass nausea and mass rage
and seeing these numbers, I'm not surprised:

"A study by Nielsen Monitor-Plus found that from Aug. 1 to Oct. 15, Crist aired 21,214 ads, more than any other politician in America."

It reached such a point of overload that I began to wonder if even people who supported him were getting irritated by the constant barrage.

But, hey! The good news is we have a gov-elect who's beholden to nobody (except Disney, Princess Tours, Clear Channel Outdoor, Palm Beach Kennel Club and U.S. Sugar, to name a few).

We are so 'screwn'.

2. I keep point this out because we need to be reminded of it.
They changed the campaign finance limits in 2005 from 8.8 million to 21 million for an individual candidate just in time for this election. Before the last Governor race, the Repugs also changed the reporting requirements so that we couldn't find the depths of Chameleon Charlie's sellout until a couple of days before the election. I also noticed that the front row seats for Crist's inaugural event are all going to Tallahassee's top lobbyists. Hang on to your wallets folks. Charlie's fixin' to do some big time whorin'.

3. Well, it's not like the Democrats had a candidate.
I only voted for Whats-His-Name because he wasn't Crist.

You can claim it was all the money "Jesus" Crist raised from the dead, but in reality, the Florida Democratic Party failed again. Maybe in '08 some of that "fifty state" attention will come to Florida, and maybe the Florida Democratic Party will be worth a damn. Hey, miracles can happen...
