I'm dissapointed in the Davis loss but it was uphill battle so it wasn't totally unexpected. However, there are signs that we're starting to regain a foothold in the state. The old Dixiecrats are losing power. We gained in house seats both in the US house and Florida State house. We also gained in constituency in courting the hispanic vote. If we can get the nonpartisan redistricting bill passed and some meaningful campaign finance reform we might be able to take back this state.

1. Redistrcting?
What's happening with that?

The Fair Elections website still says it qualified for the ballot as Amendment 5. It hasn't been updted since March of this year. The Legislature said the amendment violated the single provision clause and got the Fl SC to go along with thinking it was "logrolling."

Hmm, maybe the legislature will recognize that over 900,000 Floridians signed the petition, it is obviously the will of the people and put the amendment on the ballot themselves since their amendments are not subject to the single provision requirement. Yeah, maybe our legislature and new governor will do the right thing.

2. I heard right before the election that they're trying for 2008.
They're going to clean up the language so it can pass the single issue requirement then go out and get new petitions signed.

IMHO, they ought to dump the idea of a bipartisan committee and just make redistricting based on demographics and zip codes. You could set up a GIS map and have a computer pick the districts based on the data. That to me would be the fairest way to do it instead of getting a group of Republicans and Democrats to sit down and hash it out in some committee.

6. Puerto Ricans, Yes
But the Cubans mostly go Republican.

At least, that's what I've heard - don't have the stats on it.

3. I want Ileana Rosanadana
OUT of there.

You know, every cycle the Dem running against her gets 35% of the vote without any help at all. I've always begged the DNC to support the Dem running against her, but no one listens. Imagine if they threw some money at the candidate? All we need is 15% increase and there's a chance.

This is what I'd like to see in 2008.

A girl can dream, can't she?

4. That'd be a really, really tough fight.
This district includes a lot of Miami Beach -- relatively Democratic -- but also quite a bit of deeply red Cuban Miami. It's not as impossible as the Diaz-Balart districts, but still a very hard fight. The thinking of people like Rahm Emanuel is probably that it isn't worth the money it would cost.

8. One name
Ellian Gonzalez. When the Clinton Administration sent little Ellian back home they screwed the democrats in Florida. Those of Cuban decent remembered Ellian during the election.
