Florida Today endorses Jim Davis
http://floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061025/OPINION/610250349/1004

Florida has two strong candidates running for governor this year:

Republican Charlie Crist and Democrat Jim Davis, both political moderates who have long, admirable records of public service.

<snip>

Davis' positions on issues important to Floridians are superior.

And his track record of taking on tough fights against special interests is what's needed to break the headlock of one-party Republican leadership that's far too beholden to deep-pocket lobbyists.

1. Davis Is Getting Endorsements All Over The Place...
Will it be enough?? Do I dare think it a possibility that he could win?? Missed the debate and I'm sick about it!

2. I missed it too. Florida Today's endorsement is unexpected...
the editorial board tends to favor Republicans. I'm very pleased to see this and hope it impacts not only the gubernatorial race but also our congressional race.

I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't going to be a really low GOP turnout at the polls in 13 days.

3. I think Jim's support of property tax reform is the reason.
Jim has smartly come out for small businesses with his reform while Charlie is proposing populist legislation that has no chance of passing the FL legislature. Some of the right leaning editorial boards are moving toward Jim for that reason. The only businesses that Charlie's plan helps are large office and condo developers that can scoop up cheap small business property when their property taxes help drive them under. You see here in Florida, they have to access the tax based on the "best" use of the property. If it is near beach front and a small family restaurant, they based the value on if the property was used for a multistory condo development not its current use. It really sticks it to the little guy.

4. One Thing For Sure... As A Floridian Taxes & Insurance Rates
are HIGH priority for me. Living where I do, we got smacked with all of it!! It would be nice if Floridians paid attention for once!

5. Am coming back to Florida from NC early just to vote
and saw the debate between Davis and Crist last night on C-Span. I was very impressed with Davis and and so happy to see that Florida Today has endorsed him. It is hard to get everyday news on the election when one is out of state. I am working hard here in NC for the Democratic Party trying to get our Democratic candidate Heath Shuler elected. Things are looking good both places (NC and FL). We need to take State Houses, Governorships, Congress and Senate in Washington to start to repair the damage of the last six years. We can't give up now. Send the evil doers away.

6. Thank You For Working So Hard For Shuler.... As For Retaking
what was ours to begin with, given the bunch that we are having to "play" with is NOT going to easy OR fair!

Here in Sarasota County Christine Jennings is ahead by a little to replace The District Cruella. Vern Buchanan is a nasty piece of work, even the Repukes who duked it out with him will vouch for that. Working this past week-end here locally I ran into a candidate in the State Congressional seat, he told me that he had actually voted for the Democratic candidate!

Even with them turning on themselves, I see that further south they are ALREADY having problems with voting, and this is just "early" voting! I fear that this is the strategy THIS TIME OUT from Red Rover! Close races may simply be decided just because there is distrust of the veracity of the electronic voting machines.

I worked to get petitions signed to get a referendum on the November ballot so we can have a paper trail. Even with all the hoopla about the distrust with the machines, our local Supervisor of Elections is working very hard NOT TO HAVE A PAPER trail! Her name is Judy Dent and a rubber stamp of Cruella! My thinking is that the WH and those who roll over for them will just keep using some "fuzzy" issue to explain away why THEY actually won... no matter how stupid it looks. They know it has worked before and I don't see them backing off in any way. They will just keep finding some way to get the ball in their court!

They care not a fig what history will say about them and they have no incentive to stop. As long as they keep raking in the money they don't need much else. INTEGRITY does not enter their mind!

7. The election scramblers have set up their tents in FL and Ohio
and plan to do it AGAIN to us. This is exactly why I am returning to FL to vote. I voted absentee in 2004 and really feel that my vote was NOT counted. It gave me a taste of what it feels like to have your voice/vote (eliminated) as it has been in so many communities. Keep up your good work and let's hope that folks have had enough of this fooling around with our votes.
