Campus activism heating up
The presidential election is five weeks away, but starting this week students can expect a pair of political opponents and a 30-day protest vying to swing UCF voters' views.
Liberal author and filmmaker Michael Moore and conservative MSNBC commentator Joe Scarborough are scheduled to speak on campus within a week of each other, while the student group Campus Peace Action plans to launch its 30-day protest Saturday against the war in Iraq.
Moore, though scheduled to speak at 2 p.m. Saturday - the same day as the protest's groundbreaking - is sponsored by Campus Activities Board, not CPA, said Matt Shannon, CAB's director of cultural and fine arts.
"He called us on the phone a few days ago," Shannon said. Moore offered to speak for free, but CAB is spending about $5,000 on security, insurance and a stage, Shannon added.
