Checking-in - slight damage to some trees in my backyard but the power is back.

1. Here too, landscaping damage and a leaking roof...
fortunately I think the roofer is going to be able to get here on Saturday morning... if not, I'm in trouble if Ivan hits. We were only without power for a few hours on Saturday, and the parts of the neighborhood that were without power longer were restored on Tuesday and Wednesday.

2. Lost part of my roof a bedroom
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 12:31 PM by freetobegay
All trees, my lani. And know I have Ivan to look forward to. I still have a smile on my face (the winds from Charley made sure of that!).

3. After 2 near misses
Roof still on, oak trees vertical, and power just came back on. However, the current track of Ivan has it coming right at us. :scared:

4. We had some light damage from Charley...
siding, soffits, fence. Not as bad as most in Orlando. Since we have no old trees on the lot, we were spared that part of it.

Frances only brought three days of rain and wind.

But Ivan...

5. I was on the wrong side of both hurricanes.
but we came through swimmingly. (Not literally) We were on the wrong side, which is the east side of the two hurricanes which get the more intense backwinds. With Charley I lost my internet (until yesterday) and we had what they called canopy debris strewn all over our lawn. One tree fell, but it fell away from the house. It took two hard days of work to clean up. We didn't have power for 48 hours and lost about $200 of our perishables. We drove after the first hurricane looking for ice to save the groceries, but it was useless. We were hit the hardest in Central Florida but there was no ice to be found for miles outside of ground zero because everyone was clamoring for it.

For the second hurricane, we were prepared and had stocked our freezer with ice. We haven't purchased a generator because we simply can't afford it and because we probably couldn't get reimbursed by FEMA because of our income bracket. For the second hurricane, plywood and gas were in short supply. The plywood line at Home Depot was easily one hundred people deep. We didn't board up and did fine. We have a wonderful tree line along the NW side of the house which has protected us for over ten years. Once the trees get too big they will have to be sacrificed, but that will be for some other homeowner to do because we won't be around by then. We're moving, not because of the hurricanes, but because we understand now why living among hateful, selfish people becomes a liability during bad times. Just because a community is affluent doesn't mean that you'll find a higher class of people.

God kept us safe and I am forever thankful. What was even more revealing to me, is that the house in the community that suffered the most tree damage was the household that had been trying to take over our common grounds through adverse possession. They lost 90% of the trees on their lot and every tree that they had planted on the common grounds. I am forever humbled by God's infinite wisdom.

6. We're OK for now
Charley knocked out our power for a day or so. Frances caused a 40 foot slash pine in our yard to lean dangerously. Luckily we got it down before it hit the roof. Ivan scares the heck out of me. We are boarding up tomorrow and considering whether to head out.

7. Hi
I've been temporarily displaced due to continued power outage. Our neighborhood has been restored except for a few houses on my street.

We suffered some carpet damage, but not much else.

Sounds like you got a tougher hit than we did.

9. Finally Back to Normal
We just got power and water on yesterday. I took the longest shower yesterday! We had no damage, just a few landscaping changes. We did lose some saltwater fish, though! I am just glad that Ivan isn't coming this way!

10. Checking in - -
Just got our power back on last night at 10:30 p.m. No damage to our mobile home in spite of 105 mph winds, although some homes in my development sustained major damage. We believe a small tornado was the culprit because you can see a definite path of destruction. No homes were totally destroyed but many lost roofs, carports, and screenrooms. Two had additions destroyed. I believe most electricity was restored in this development except for some "snowbirds" who aren't around to repair the weatherheads that may have been damaged. Just as I write this a Texas crew has shown up outside, so I guess there is still work to be done here.

We lost all our food, satellite dish twisted, lost our entire orange crop from two trees, and had to have our weatherhead replaced, but all of this does not equal our deductible. My husband is also out about $600 from lost work (he's self employed). Other than that, we came through with flying colors.

I hope everyone here fared as well or better than we did. God, that air conditioner feels GOOD!

11. Glad you made it through it, FlaGranny, but
you shouldn't have to sustain those kind of losses. Make the claim to your insurance co. anyway, and when they decline it, give the paperwork to FEMA.

12. Got Power back on Sunday (Sept 12)
But just got the DSL back tonight.

We were without power or a phone for 8 days, but had no structural damage, etc. Was pretty scary when the trees started going, but they somehow missed almost all the houses in our neighborhood.

We live in Delray Beach, btw.

13. Did you buy a generator to cover you for those 8 days?
FEMA reimbursed someone I know for the cost of a generator because she went without power for a week. Check to see if you qualify. They're very expensive.

I haven't tried FEMA, personally, because we were very fortunate, but I'm wondering if I should report a semi-price-gouging incident. We bought a chainsaw Wildthing from Home Depot just in case the second hurricane hit us just as hard as the first. (we have an electrical one that was useless for two-three days while we were out of power) We then found out that the Wildthing is only good for 30 hours! It's in the small print you fail to read when you're panic buying. What do you know? Now they make disposable chainsaws.

14. I'm going home for the first time tomorrow
to Ft. Pierce. Not sure what I will find. Long story short...I spent the winter in Canada and was traveling home when Frances appeared. Stayed in Pascagoula MS to avoid that one, now MS is a target. Left there Monday and am now in Melbourne. Tomorrow I will see what Frances did to the place where I was born, and figure out how to rebuild. I work in citrus, so my job is basically gone.
The good news...I am a registered Democrat...and I vote!
Let's take Florida back!!

15. Now that the non-Floridians will be leaving because of the
rough Hurricane season, maybe we can take our state back!
