Scott won't seek new vouchers

Gov. Rick Scott said Tuesday that he won't ask the Legislature for any new school vouchers this year after indicating that he'd find a way to accommodate any student who wanted to transfer from public to private schools.

"We have a lot of choice now," Scott said. "I want to expand that choice by making sure we have more charters schools going forward. And that's my focus right now."

Scott's education policy adviser told the House budget committee on Tuesday that Scott hoped to expand a current voucher program that lets students at a failing public school transfer to another public school in the same district or in an adjacent district.

Scott also wants more charter schools in the state this year. In his budget proposal, Scott asks lawmakers to spend more on renovation of charter schools than public schools, community colleges or state universities.
