floridians is help needed for you, your family or friends hurricane
If you, your family, your friends, family friends, or friends of friends need help or articles or have no insurance or what ever.

Post your needs and let people pm you for information on sending help or where to send articles. Just thought we at DU might be able to help some of those in shock in Florida at this time.

2. Contact Red Cross Or United Way

It is hard knowing what people need to send items. What people really need can't be shipped easily (ice, water, batteries, etc) I believe both these agencies are offering assistance, if you want your donation to go to the hurricane affected areas, you may want to ask for a local number or if they have a special fund.

Some people do need financial assistance to cover the insurance gap.

3. I posted because I am sure there are people who need help
but will not get it from either of these groups. I have seen that first hand.

Red cross does not help those who have insurance, even though they won't see that money for months. They may give them some meals but not much else.

People don't realize this until a disaster happens. With 911 they were going to spend a lot of money on upgrading their offices and computers. It was intended for the families who needed immediate assistance...

I am still hoping those who know people who truly need help will post.

4. You're So Nice!
I have always heard good things about Red Cross, United Way, but never had to deal with them.

The logistics right now are so overwhelming. Hurricane affected areas have gas shortages, food shortages, etc. even in central Florida and it is worse in southwest Florida. Batteries are like gold because hundreds of thousands still have no power (including my home in east Orange County - I am at work)

People are unemployed because their business was destroyed by the storm.

The worst is, even for those who have insurance, most policies carry a 2% hurricane deductible and may not cover things like tree removal which could run a few thousand dollars.

5. Thanks for your thoughts and effort
We were very lucky here. Storm passed 20-30 miles south of me and the winds were no worse than an average summer thunder shower. Yep, we were lucky.
