Tax Money Used For Suspected Cat Killer's Defense
Source: CBS4

Miami-Dade taxpayers are going to have to foot part of the bill in the defense of a Cutler Bay teen accused of mutilating and murdering nearly two dozen cats in south Miami-Dade.

David Macey, who is representing 18-year-old Tyler Weinman, said his case may involve more than 100 witnesses. Weinman's family is struggling to pay their son's legal. Under a motion granted Monday by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John Thornton, taxpayer money will be used to pay for part of Weinman's defense. Defense attorneys can tap up to $10 thousand of county dollars for depositions and $25 hundred for investigative costs. Thornton also cut the daily cost of Weinman's electronic monitoring bracelet.

Weinman is charged with 19 counts each of animal cruelty and improperly disposing of an animal body. He also faces four counts of burglary related to the cat deaths. He has pleaded not guilty.

2. Taxpayer money
As despicable as animal cruelty is, isn't a right to an attorney pretty much a given? I recall watching enough TEEVEE to know that ability to pay for one is not what determines whether an accused criminal receives representation. So stop with the bullshit incendiary news clips.

5. Right-- taxpayer money also goes to defend...
accused murderers and rapists if they can't afford a lawyer, so why not this guy?

It's fundamental to any modern justice system.

(But 100 witnesses for the cat killer's trial?)

9. taxpayer money also goes to defend
innocent people who are falsely accused. You're right, 100 witnesses for an animal abuse case is very strange and overkillish. I don't think they have any real evidence though.
