Nation's Angriest Cities
POSTED: 10:59 am CDT August 15, 2006

A study conducted by Men's Health magazine has found that Orlando, Fla., ranks No. 1 on a list of the angriest cities in the nation.

"Orlando has never been a strategic military target, and yet the folks there are furious," the magazine said.

The magazine looked at the percentage of men with high blood pressure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and FBI rates for aggravated assaults, as well as workplace deaths from assaults and other violence. Those numbers were compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Top 10 Angriest Cities
1-Orlando, Fla. (What has Mickey (or Jeb) been doing?)
2-St. Petersburg, Fla.
3-Detroit
4-Baltimore
5-Nashville, Tenn.
6-Wilmington, Del.
7-Miami
8-Memphis, Tenn.
9-Jacksonville, Fla.
10-St.Louis

Why is Wilmington so angry?
Magazine ranks Delaware's largest city sixth angriest in U.S. -- 21 places above Philly

WILMINGTON -- The bumper sticker on the dirty Subaru said it all: "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention."

The driver was stuck this week on Martin Luther King Boulevard during a traffic jam -- one of the aggravating factors Men's Health magazine cited this month in naming Wilmington the sixth-angriest city in America.

OUR VIEW

Men's Health magazine thinks Wilmington is a place be an angry somebody.

We're mad on behalf of everybody here, and we're not going to take it anymore.

The magazine singled out Wilmington because local males are prone to high blood pressure, the city has high rates of aggravated assault and workplace-related violence, traffic congestion and speeding citations statewide.

But that's all poppycock. How many work-related violent deaths do you recall in the city within recent memory?

We're ticked because statewide statistics are being lumped into the city's profile.

But what irritates our overly sensitive antennae the most is that questionable research is proffered as respectable science.

Sure, crime is an increasing problem in Wilmington, but is it bad enough to get ranked 21 points higher than Philadelphia? In the City of Brotherly Love last month, Mayor John Street had to take to the public airways to reassure frightened residents while the pace of shooting deaths there soared beyond record levels. Philadelphia also lost its bid for the 2008 Olympics.

We don't hate Philly, but come on. ... We're too angry to continue.

3. Somehow the samples are not big enough
For smaller cities, one year will make them look like they have more crime and another year will make them look like they have less.

It must be something of that nature, I'm thinking. No way is Wilmington more violent than oh, let's say, LA or NY or Chicago or Houston. It just has fewer people and one year with a lot of assaults will make it disproportionate, maybe. Unless that data somehow takes that all into account.
