Food Stamps, Pensions, Medicaid Payments Still Delayed

POSTED: 11:37 am MDT September 27, 2004
UPDATED: 1:36 pm MDT September 27, 2004

DENVER -- County officials vented their frustrations over a troubled welfare computer in a meeting with Gov. Bill Owens on Monday but said they would keep working with the system.

The new computer has been blamed for delaying food stamps, pension payments, Medicaid and other vital services for hundreds of thousands of people. Owens ordered the computer system to go online on Sept. 1 despite pleas from county officials who said it wasn't ready.

Half a dozen county officials met with Owens for an hour and afterward said the old system of distributing benefits was no longer usable.

(snip)

About 22,000 people who care for grandchildren were warned they may not get their checks Oct. 1, but state Human Services director Marva Hammons said Monday she expects most of those checks to go out on time.

(DID they? It's October 4th, mid-afternoon... Doesn't Bill Owens claim to be a "compassionate conservative?")

1. EDS was started by Perot, who owns it now, I wonder.

story from October 5:

" The state's beleaguered benefits system appeared to work Friday, sending food stamps and cash assistance to Colorado's neediest people. "

*snip*

" "Anecdotally, we only had less than a dozen telephone calls from people with complaints," said Thomas Papin, director of Mesa County's Department of Human Services. His department provides cash assistance to about 700 people and food stamps for 4,400.

It's a lot better than what county officials feared, watching the case backlog grow in September because of significant delays. "
