400-year-old oak flourishing after L.A. county developers move it

Monday, March 21, 2005

(03-21) 17:56 PST Los Angeles (AP) --

"Old Glory" is sprouting green again.

The 400-year-old oak tree that gained worldwide attention when a man spent 71 days in its branches to protest its removal is back to its natural cycle after being moved by developers last year, activists said Monday.

Environmentalist and tree-sitter John Quigley, religious leaders, community groups and students held a ceremony Monday to celebrate the beginning of spring and the rebirth of the oak nicknamed "Old Glory."

"We're cautiously optimistic," Quigley said but added that it will take many more years for the tree to permanently take root in its new spot.

Developers initially planned to chop down the tree to widen a road for a new housing development. The company agreed to relocate the oak, which was projected to cost $1 million, after Quigley's demonstration made it a cause celeb among environmentalists and local residents.

5. Screams out for a wife. I thought that was a bit of a cheap shot until
I saw that the dander problem had not been 'worker out' as he becomes WB chair. Perhaps it is some sort of psy-ops.
