A nonprofit watchdog group filed a lawsuit Tuesday in an effort to stop Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger from helping to raise big contributions for ballot measures he wants to put before voters in a special election this fall.
TheRestofUs.org filed a complaint last month with the California Fair Political Practices Commission arguing that the governor was violating a state law that capped how much money a donor could contribute to a candidate controlled committee.
The watchdog group claimed that Schwarzenegger is playing a controlling role in a committee organized by supporters of the governor that is backing his ballot measures, called Citizens to Save California.
Under state law, a candidate-controlled committee cannot accept more than $22,300 from any single donor in the same election cycle. Citizens to Save California, however, has accepted in recent weeks checks of more than $1 million from single contributors.
