Stark's (CA-D) reply finds its way to Limbaugh
Stark's (CA-D) reply finds its way to Limbaugh
Representative's heated response to letter played on radio show, Internet

By Josh Richman and Sandhya SomashekharS, TAFF WRITERS

A man who wrote to Rep. "Pete" Stark criticizing his Thursday vote against a resolution on abuse of Iraqi prisoners got a personal reply within the hour -- voice mail from Stark inviting him to explain why he thinks he's "such a great goddamn hero."

"I think I got the point across," Stark, a Democrat, whose district includes Pleasanton and Sunol along with Fremont, said Friday after the voice-mail message had been posted online and become the topic of heated local talk radio; syndicated host Rush Limbaugh played it nationwide later Friday.

"I probably would've left out the blasphemy ... it was a poor choice of words," added Stark, 72. "Other than that, I would stand by the entire statement that I made to him. We can't call back our words. If that's the part that offended him, I would humbly apologize."

"I guess that means he stands by his statement that enlisted men are too stupid to spell," shot back Daniel L. Dow, 33, the Newark tech sales executive, Army National Guard sergeant and 2002 Republican Assembly candidate who drew Stark's ire.

2. He sure made a poor choice
He should have stopped and counted to 10 before picking up the phone.

Form letters, while annoying at times, are a good way to communicate without getting caught in the heat of the moment.

9. You have to know Pete...
to understand him. He is my congressman, and people in my district have re-elected him since who knows when. We love him because he is a fighter, for the working stiff, with a short fuse. Gotta love the guy. The more republicans hate him, the more we love him. GO PETE!!!

4. Wasn't the guy from Newark, Ca?
Newark is right next to Fremont, which I believe is Pete Stark's district.

If this guy is from Newark, NJ, then you are right, he shouldn't have responded.

6. East side of the Dumbarton Bridge.
Newark has grown a lot in the past 10 years. Sun Microsystems moved in and along with that came hotels etc... They took land that used to have horses and pastures. As far as I know, the National Wildlife Refuge is still safe, I remember a movement years ago to keep Papa Bush from eliminating it.

I used to have family in that area, most have now moved away from the bay area.

7. Good for him
Not that I think he should make it a habit, but sometimes you have to indulge yourself. Damn, I bet it felt good.
